Cannot connect to the internet!?!?!? plz help

Hey, im using a router at the moment, but want to change my modem to a DYNALINK RTA100. ive had this modem for while, and lost the book on how to connect. I have used this modem before, when i first got it, but when i want to try and connect it again it does not. Im using an ethernet cord, but i have 2, a crossover and a straight through one. im not sure which to use? When i put all the plugs in, it says that the 'local area connection is unplugged' Can someone help please??

What is you configuration at the moment? What's connected to what? (Ex. modem to router to computer.) Also, go to start > settings > network connections. Make sure its the LAN thats enabled and not something like a bluetooth connection.
