HP wants to shut down before loading Windows

I am working on an HP. It had ME on it and I just put 98 on it. Got all of the drivers for it, everything was working perfectly Saturday. It hasn't been used since Saturday. This morning the person who it belongs to wants to see if a flat panel monitor will work with the computer. We hooked it up to the monitor. It starts up. You get the HP screen, then the Windows 98 screen. Then it goes black. About 2 minutes later if you just let it sit, it says "it is now safe to shut down your computer." Does it sound like something with the power button sticking? Could that be possible? It won't let me into safe mode either. It does the same thing. If not the power button sticking, any other ideas?

That's weird. I doubt that it is the power button. To doublecheck, you could manually short it out... but if it always happens at the same time, then I severely doubt it.
