I'll start by saying I have an understanding with printers, I hate them and they hate me, always have always will.
OK, I bought a Xerox M940 Multifunction unit. It prints/scans/copies and faxes if you have a modem in your comp. The first week or so of college it was great, did everything it was supposed to do. Then I installed norton antivirus and had to format my computer (Norton is the devil) which required reinstalling my printer. Here's where the fun begins. My computer wouldn't boot if the printer was plugged in, but as soon as I unplugged the USB cable it's attached by, it boots fine. I called up Xerox tech support about this, and they didnt' know what to do. We eventually wound up reinstalling it with a minimal set of drivers, and it seemed to work fine. Thennit bugged out again and I uninstalled it. The printer itself went fine, but a program used to control scanning and faxing through it (Pagis Pro 3.0) decided it didn't want to uninstall. It would give me path not found and missing file errors, and only partially uninstalled. I now have a folder in my computer with no name that can't be moved or deleted, and windows has decided it's a system folder. It used to be where pagis was.
About 2 weeks after all this I had a paper due that I needed printed here because it was too early for public facilities and nobody I know was home, so I reinstalled my printer and it printed fine. But it won't scan (it does copy so I know it isn't broken) and I'm getting the thing where my computer locks up on booting. If the printer's USB cable isn't plugged in or I remove it, the comp boots normally with no apparent side effects. I just tried plugging it in while the comp was already running to try printing something thinking it should be Plug and Play compatible as almost all USB devices are. MS word found the printer and loaded it to the queue, but all the printer did was print out 8 lines of garbled DOS style ascii, and stop. I waited about 5 minutes and it didn't budge, so I tried cancelling the print job and closing the printer, no luck there. All that did was lock up the printer window. I unplugged the printer which wasn't responding to any buttons and an erorr popped up in Spool32 on my computer, which I've never heard of before.
I was wondering if anybody knew anything I could try short of a format and clean reinstall of everything to fix this problem. I'm gonna pick up a serial cable at the campus comp store tomorrow after class and try using that, the Xerox tech suggested I do that if anything else ever went wrong.

Hmm, doesn't the printer have a parallel port option? I had problems with USB printers CONSTANTLY (especially with my Epson Stylus 860), and only when I switched to a parallel port did it work properly again ...
I dunno, it looks like you have buggy software ... are you using Win98, ME or Win2K? Have you made sure that you have the latest printer drivers for that model? What otehr USB devices do you have plugged in at the same time as the printer?
If the program in error doesn't want to uninstall itself, then try reinstalling it, then once again do an uninstall...

Windows 98 SE, only other USB things are my keyboard and mouse. As stated, I'm going to pick up a parallel cable which I for some reason called serial. I tried reinstalling pagis pro, but it didn't want to install or uninstall, no matter how many times I tried.
And the latest version of the software does the same thing as the old one.
