Ok I knew this guy from way back. I ran into him the other day. He needed help with a pc he had, it was having problems. He just gave me the tower cuz he was going away for the weekend. I get it home, plug it in and hit the power switch. Nothing happens. I smell something a little strange. I then unplug it. Its a pentium II chip. I then open the case and find a mother board almost completely burnt, the cpu melted straight through it, and melted wires and everything, it was a big mess. He calls me on sunday and asks if I found anything. I tell him yeah, his whole pc is fried, and then I ask how it could have happend. He then tells me:
"Oh well I wanted my computer to go faster, and I didnt really want to buy a whole new pc, so I overclocked the cpu."
I then ask him how much he did it and what the orignal speed was.
"Well it was a 233mhz Pentium II and I over clocked it to about 900mhz."
Do I need to finish the story?

Hmm, that's a strange tale ... because for him to be able to overclock a chip from 233 to 900 would entail a lot of knowledge with how to work dip switches, heatsinks, BIOS adjustments, etc... the fact that he got actually started overclocking it means he knows what he was doing...
Now the weird part is if he had enough knowledge to go inside his PC and overclock it, then why would he call you up and ask what the problem was? If he knew enough to open his PC and start overclocking, it means he has some basic knowledge of how hardware works.
Besides, it is almost impossible to overclock a 233MHz chip to anything higher than 700 or even 600, especially a Pentium II ... unless he used a meat freezer as a heatsink...

Well from what I know about him:
I dont think that he personally overclocked it.
I dont think that it was overclocked to 900mhz.
And I dont think he has ever opened a pc.
When I knew him back a few years ago, he didnt know jack squat about pc's and when I was talking to him on thursday, he didnt seem to know much either. I think someone else overclocked it for him and botched it. I know very little about overclocking myself.
Also, it took me and hour to find out how to open the case. I couldnt find anything to get it off. There were some screws but that was it. I tried sliding it pulling it, just about everything. Finnaly I got it off. There was some kind of hook on the bottom of it, it was really weird.
Anyways, the basic thing was that the whole thing was toast except the hard drive and cdrom. Even the power supply had crapped out. I was wondering how the thing didnt completely go in flames. He said it was 2 days after before it stoped working. The guy was acting a little weird when he brought it over anyways. Just thought I would share that story with some of you.
(frankly, i dont think a 233 can be overclocked to 900mhz unless its in a meat freezer too.)
