Sound card stops Graphics card from working

Hi,

I have an nVidia XFX GeForce FX 5200 (AGP) graphics card, and just went out and purchased a new Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS sound card. When I install the sound card the machine fails to detect the graphics card correctly, or rather windows does; as everything appears fine including the Windows loading screen but from the login screen onwards everything is 4bit color and a max res of 800x600.

Upon further inspection of the display settings/properties it says it is using the SureVGA drivers or something like that, and the graphics card details are all blank. When I look in the Device Manager it shows the correct graphics card details though.

I have tried to reinstall the nVidia drivers and that did nothing for me, but as soon as I physically remove the sound card, I get the full functionality of the graphics card again.

I have placed the sound card in several PCI slots and nothing changed, things only seem to work with the sound card removed.

If it matters, I am using a freshly installed Windows XP MCE 2005 - only minutes before the video and sound drivers were added.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is happening and how I can resolve it?

Regards,
Charlie

Try a registry cleaner / repair software.

Sounds like it could be a BIOS setting that needs tweaking? You could try setting it to a non-PNP OS (if it isn't already?) which should force the BIOS to allocate resources to the cards
