SLI Cards

Hi guys - I was wondering if I could use some of your pooled hardware knowledge???
As you might have seen, I've just recently ordered myself a new monitor - this is mainly because I've just got myself a brand-spanking new desktop computer - this one:
http://www.lidl.co.uk/gb/home.nsf/p...a_AN64_3700Plus
(and very good it is too, great value for money).
Anyway, as you can see, it's currently got a single nVidia 6600GT 128MB in it - which so far I'm impressed with, but I don't think it'll be long before I upgrade it. Because SLI is all the rage at the moment, I'd be keen on going down this route - but before I can, I need to know more about it, and what it's requirements are.
The motherboard I've got is a Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 (targa edition - whatever that means). According to this:
http://www.service.targa.co.uk/dokumente/3700_en.gif
it's got one PCI-Express 16x slot (currently being used by my graphics card) and two PCI-Express 1x slot (both free). Does anyone know the diffrence between these? And is it good enough for me to run some SLI cards in?
(I think I realise that I can't, which is a shame, but nevermind)
Oh, and while I'm here - what type of RAM do I need? I'm gonna get another 2x 512RAM to put in it.

Nope, you can't unfortunatly use SLI on that mobo.
You need 2 X PCI E 16X slots. An SLI bridge, linking the videocards together. And preferably 520 W PSU or even more would be good. There are some SLI approved PSU:s out there. Antec, Enermax and Thermaltake for example.
But why not get a 7800GT or GTX instead? This will be A "near SLI encounter"
Corsair SMX would be a good choise for RAM. Alternative: Kingston Hyper X.
Good series 7 makes are:
Leadtek
Gigabyte
eVGA
XFX

OK, I guess that would be the next best thing.. from what I understand, for SLI to be any good, you need to have games and apps that take advantage of the technology, otherwise it's wasted.
I can't afford it yet at any rate, but at least I know I can't do it, but can keep my eyes open for killer cards at killer prices (need to buy the ram first - I've got 1GB in there at the moment - I might donate it to my mum and get myself two 1GB chips - some of the good stuff (it'll be expensive, but hopefully worth it )

Not nessisairly true.
Most games and graphics apps, will benifit from SLI.
I have a friend that resently, got another 6600GT and set up SLI.
He got a very nice preformance boost, graphics wise. Far Cry for ex. He whas able to run at much higher resoloution. And all the "bells and whistles" turned on.
I also remember he got lot better scores in benchmarks. can't remember the exact difference in points. Single videocard v.s SLI though.

Here is a nice kit! get 2 of those and your rig will fly.
Corsair TWINX1024-3200C2PRO DDR 1024MB Kit w/two matched 512MB 3200C2 PRO's DIM
£102.00. Komplett. U.K.
OR:
Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2 DDR-DIMM 2048MB Kit w/two matched CMX1024-3200C2 DIMMs
£208.00

You know, £200 sounds like a lot of money for RAM - is it really worth it? What type of boost to preformance am I going to get? Is it going to be something I can see and tel the diffrence with?

You get SOME improvements. Like little faster load times and some better response. But don't expect any mayor differenses.
If you want a good solid performance and high quality, without the extra little ommph.
Then this is a good alternative:
Corsair Value S. PC3200 DDR-DIMM 1024MB £75.00
Corsair Value S. PC3200 DDR-DIMM 2048MB Kit w/two matched Value Select 1024MB £168.00
These are good memories and pretty fast.
