computer freezes

Hi,
I have a 3.4GHz computer running Windows XP Media Centre Edition with 2 GB RAM

I had to format the hard drive for cleanup - then after installing Windows again when I tried to install the graphics card (Sapphire Radeon X300SE 128MB) software - the moment the cd is inserted and when the program attempts to start from the cd for installation - the whole computer freeezes. Do not know why .....! Please help.

What else I have tried is to restart the computer with the cd in the tray - after the bootup I tried to update the display drivers form the device manager - it successfully updated the drivers from the same cd which caused it to freeze before and there is no conflicts of hardware.

But still when I try to install the program ATI Catalyst Manager form the cd it still freezes. I also tried to download the whole software from the internet and tried installing it - it frooze again - so this rules out that the cd or the cd drive being defective.

Any help will be much appreciated.

gsmultani ,

Well, I would say forget the CD and download the driver from the web. Assuming that doesn't help, it sounds like your CDROM is going bad. Lastly, you can't just use the XP driver for Media Center, I know they all say you can. But you can't. You must download a XP-MC2005 driver, at least for ATI products. I have not had issues (yet) with XP to Xp-MC2005 issues with Nvidia.
Also, 2gigs of RAM. Uhh.. do a RAM test too, only take a few minutes. I recommend windows memory tester. available from microsoft.com for free.
