my puter is un-useable. it used to hang couple times an hour and had to be re-booted. ISP told me to re-load windows. I re-loaded legal cy of XP home (took an entire day) and now my emachines (500MHZ) -5 yr old, will boot to desktop but anything i try to do (such as open browser), it hangs with wait symbol and if i leave alone, will go to blank screen. ran spybot serach and destroy just before re-loading win, as i suspect a virus. any ideas gang? help! I have ordered new puter but wont be here for 10 days(?).

did you partition and format before attempting to install windows?

Posted by: deshana

rfield55 ,

When you install XP make sure you format the hard drive. It will normally give an option to "quick" format, which is very nice. Go ahead and do that, but it will destroy all data including malware. If all that doesn't work again, run a memory tester and a hard drive tester. Windows memory tester is free from microsoft.com and salavation scan for your hard drive, is available from download.com.

thanks to redwrench and deshana. i didnt do format as i have so much on the HD and didnt want to lose it. it looks like i will have to do that when i get machine built up again. just now using my grandsons' puter and limping along w/o my files, so will be some time before i try the old puter again. thanks again.
