What could be the problem

My dad's system always shuts down whenever I try to defragment my drive and also ocassionally when I run memory intensive programs(Games, graphics) - even browsing the net.
I have a suspicion this is to do with my RAM. My system came with a pathetic 128MB RAM. I upgraded it by adding another 256MB about a year ago. I've been having this problem eversince. I went through 3 different types/brands of RAM - all gave the same problem. The orginal RAM is SAMSUNG (PC2100 128DDR) and the addition is a Hynix 256MB PC 2100 DDR and the frequency is matched. The current 256 is the one that has given me the longest duration of uptime. Now it again recurring with distressing regularity. I noticed that the add on RAM has some play. Could that be causing the problem?
My config is P4 1.7Ghz, 128+256MB DDR, XP Home SP1.
Any help would be appreciated.

motherboard or the original ram would be the likely culprits. www.memtest.org
