Hard drive parameters undetectable

I have 2 hard drives (80gb) standard ide inteface. During the post, the drives are detected but the parameters for them are not causing the second post screen to show a flashing cursor as though the system is atempting to detect the drive. It then seems to freeze, causing me to reeboot the computer.
One is a seagate 80gb 7200 drive the other is a western ditial 80gb 7200 drive. One also has win xp pro on it whilst the other is brand new with no OS currently installed on it.
I have attempted to locate the parameters automatically in the bios, but again, this seems to cause the computer to freeze up.
I am now at a complete loss as to what may be causing this and how to fix it.
Any help, info, tips, ideas, etc would be GRATEFULLY appreciated as im completely out of ideas as to what to do next.
I have not installed both of these drives together, only one at a time. I also seem to be able to input the parameters manually in the bios, but I dont know what they are.
TY for taking the time to read this post.

My guess is that the master/slave jumpers are not set properly. Put them both in on one IDE, set the one with OS to master and the second to slave.
