When I boot Windows ME the screen loads and I then receive a large red message
"IT IS NOW SAFE TO TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER"
and the cmputer turns off by itself.
The startup disk does not load " safe mode" and cannot boot from the disk.

Try unplugging the entire computer and components for a minute and then trying to boot up after everything is plugged in. Try putting the OS disk in the cd drive, too.

I would recommend getting rid of ME anyways. I did that for my parents computer last night (was running a 930Mhz P3 that ran slower than my 400Mhz). ME causes so many errors and problems that it's not even funny. Especially when networking. Haha.

Yeah and the same for for windows 98. My dad has that and has to reboot at least once every day.

What happens when you put the OS disk in the CD drive without the boot disk? And the boot disk without the OS disk? And what are your system specifications? (ex. hard disk, RAM, processor) Mabye you could get a windows xp disk. But if you do not want to spend the money and keep the ME disk, you could always reinstall the operating system. But be warned, you will lose all data. Have you backed up important files recently recently?

You may have a virus that has infected some of your DOS batch files. If this is true you can either boot from a rescue disk if you have one, but if you don't, then the only other option would be to reinstall the operating system. Or if you have shared the root of your hard disk on a home network, you can repair the file from another computer.
