SlickRun, QUickStart, and others...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: uh...ok

For some reason, even though I've been using a Mac laptop for a little over a year now, and have been using QuickSilver for almost as long, it never occurred to me to ask the question, "Why can't my Windows box do that?"

In any case, for those of you who have not yet found the light like I have, I just thought I wanted to share some cool stuff I just found. (They're all free!)

SlickRun - which is what I've currently settled on using. It basically lets you program macro words for opening programs and such, and allows you to call programs with specified parameters (either preprogrammed, or typed in on the spot). i.e. "firefox.exe URL" will open up your firefox browser at the URL. SlickRun is awesome because it also lets you set the hotkey to practically anything (I use ctrl+space). Only disadvantage is that at the moment, everything is still manual, so it's not really that much like QuickSilver. Hopefully they'll extend it in the future to index programs on disk. My favorite application of the macros is definitely being able to type in a single word to call up a PutTY terminal that's already ssh'd into my athena server.
QuickStart - is more like QuickSilver because it actually allows you to search through all the programs it finds under a list of directories you specify (in addition to a default programs directory - I'm not sure what it uses). The only annoyance is that you can't use "space" as a part of the hotkey combo, and you have to hit "Enter" twice to get anything to run from the launchbar.
Launchy - is the last runner up. It has a cleaner interface than QuickStart, and only requires you to press Enter once. The only problem is that you can't customize *anything* - it seems to be set to only search through programs in your start menu, and you can't change this.

Of course, all of them come with autocomplete (SlickRun does file autocompletion as well).

Yeah, these have been around for awhile, so I don't know how the heck I've not ever thought to find them before...
