USA military hand-to-hand training where did it go?

growing up i allways thought that the military taught you how to protect yourself and taught you hand-to-hand combat skills in basic training, well obviously i was wrong. as most of you know im 19. well many of my friends are older then i and went into the service(all branches) and most have served there terms and come back. well its come to my attention that they have no hand-to-hand combat training, ive seen many many street fights and whatnot and everyone who went threw the service shows no sign of ANY training, no defenceive stances no blocking nothing... now i am aware(atleast i think) that there not supposed to use there "training" in the real world. but these guys ive known all my life and they would use there "training" if they had any.
what im wondering is why?

im guessing none of your friends are navy seals, or in any other unit that requires hand to hand. mainly because theyre getting in fights.......

that's odd. a friend of mine from arizona signed up a couple of years ago, and he was trained in such things!
it seems incredibly unlikely that people aren't trained, they may just be enjoying the idea of street brawling for the sake of doing so, rather than popping joints and busting kneecaps.

Oh, sorry. my last bit is, I guess, unlikely, as I didn't actually read your entire post, just kind of skimmed over it quickly before my eyes could glaze over.

it may depend on the branch of service they joined. if i am not mistaken i do believe that all marine recruits receive some basic hand to hand defensive training, pugil(sp?) sticks and the like. and i know that the marine corps is now offering a new MOS (though i have forgetten the designation number) for MMA instructors... 10-86Bravo, maybe?
i don't know if the army or air force train everyone in hand to hand, as not all units are expected to fight, unlike the marines where they are all theoretically combative units...
then again they might just have lost all of their training, it may never have been pounded into them to become reflexive

between all my friends atleast one was in each branch,(granted most were army and navy)
but unless all these people seemed to forget there training im still stumped

I was even in ROTC and we don't even have the official "basic training" and we recieved some hand to hand combat training.

Army and the marines are the only ones that teach any real type of hand to hand..... the Marines use a variant of Judo.... and even assign belts to members.... Recent program. My cousin is a green belt.
Army has some hand to hand... but it isnt quite as thorough as the Marines.
The Chair Force and the Navy dont really have to worry about hand to hand unless they are a part of some special tactical force.
Like anything else though..... just because you are taught hand to hand for 1 week in boot camp doesnt mean you are going to retain it 5 years later.... some of these people might have been in a career field where they didnt have to retain those skills.
