hooking up a router with DSL modems

ok people,
when you hook up a router to a modem, the modem (dsl) should FIRST be changed to BRIDGED mode... see the router needs to be in charge of logging you in to the ISP... originally the modem was doing that, but with a router hooked up, the modem should only be a dumb box and let the router do the loggin in. Now, I'm not familiar with the particular modems that SBC yahoo is using, but it really doesn't matter, just follow these steps...(BEFORE HOOKING UP THE ROUTER, WHILE THE MODEM IS STILL DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO THE PC VIA ethernet cable!!!!)
1. click on start, run and enter CMD and hit the enter key
2. type in IPCONFIG /ALL and hit the enter key
3. write down the ip address of the DEFAULT GATEWAY (this is the ip address for the modem)
4. close the cmd window by clicking on the X in the upper right corner
5. start internet explorer (or whatever browser you use)
6. type in the ip address that you wrote down above, usually in the format of 192.168.1.x and hit enter
7. there will be a setting somewhere on this web page that contains the entry PPPOE, change it to BRIDGED
8. be sure to save the changes, there's probably a SAVE CHANGES or similar button at the bottom of the page
9. power off your modem for at least 1 minute, just unplug the power cable
10. while the modem is off, unplug the ethernet cable from your PC and hook it up between the modem and the linksys router (or whatever brand you have), be sure the ethernet cable is connected between the modem and the router using the INTERNET ports (labeled as such) on the backs of the two boxes (there should only be one place to connect the cable on the back of the modem anyway)
11. now, hook up another ethernet cable between the computer and the router
12. turn the modem back on
13. start internet explorer
14. type in 192.168.1.1 and hit enter, (if that doesn't bring up the routers config web page, then you don't have a linksys router and you should try, 192.168.1.254)
15. change the routers setting to PPPOE and enter in your login and password info, then be sure to save the changes
16. power off the router for about 1 min and then power it back on
17. start internet explorer and you should be online, forever and ever and ever...

PS. if you have any trouble, just try unplugging the power for both modem and router for at least 1 minute and the turn the modem back on, and then the router back on, that will prob fix it, if you followed the instructions above... good luck
