security ideas or experience?

Hi, I'm thinking of using my computer as a server for a laptop. Now I won't have any problems setting up apache and mysql php etc. But I'm worried about security. Would windows xp firewall and sygate offer sufficient protection? Or is it just a bad idea using my own pc as a server instead of an internet host?
any ideas or comments are welcome.

I don't think you should run both firewalls at the same time. And if you are going to use your pc as a server then make sure you invest in a good firewall, not a free one.

Actually, I run an Apache server on the Windows box I'm using now to host my own webpage. There's really very little security risks introduced from hosting an HTTP server on your box. You're no more likely to have your machine compromised than before (except maybe that it's a little more visible now). Apache in itself sufficient security features built-in, so you shouldn't need to worry about security so much. Just make sure you read over the Apache documentation and set it up properly.
On a totally unrelated note, most free software firewalls actually do a sufficient job in protecting you from the run-of-the-mill malware you'll encounter on the 'net. I personally use Agnitum's Outpost Firewall, which I've always preferred over ZoneAlarm. But both would work just fine, and Sygate is probably just as good.
But on a more relevant note: what do you plan to have your server do exactly? From the looks of it, are you planning to host a bulletin board service of some sort? And what internet service do you have? Most ISPs heavily limit the amount of bandwidth that you can send, so you shouldn't expect to be able to run a heavy-traffic site without finding and paying a real hosting service.

I'm not sure about the site yet, but it's not gonna be heavy-traffic no worries there. It's probably gonna be a site me and some other people can modify online via a login system using php. as I already said, don't know what it's gonna be about yet. It's just an idea so far. but thanks for the info.

The best firewall is a router. If you use that along with a firewall program then you will not have to worry about malware.
