I just acquired this laptop PC and wondered if there is anyway to add a DVD player to the unit. It has a CD-ROM already. Thanks in advance!

Hi!

The easiest way, would be to get an external USB DVD combo drive.

Example

LITE-ON Black 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 4X 16X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache USB 2.0 External DVD Burner Model SOHW-1693SX Black - Retail $89.99

Or if you wanna "build" one yourself ( very easy).

BYTECC ME-340U2 Aluminum 5.25" USB 2.0 Silver External Enclosure - Retail $32.99

NEC Black 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 16X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache IDE DVD Burner - OEM $37.99

Newegg, webshop.

I don't think you can add an internal one, so USB DVD players are your best option. A good way to shop online is to type the model of DVD player into froogle and then search. Froogle is a shopping search from google.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately my Compaq doesn't have a 'normal' USB interface. It does have a 9-pin plug in the back. Is there an adapter that will make this a USB port.

In general, no, you can't convert ports to become USB.

What kind of plug is that? You should probably consult your manual. If it's firewire, then all you need to do is find an external DVD player that has firewire support.

If you have a 32-bit CardBus Type II? Then this could be a soloution. You will have to excuse this maybe silly question? But my knowledge of Laptops are somewhat limited.

D-Link DUB-C2 USB 2.0 PCMCIA Card 2x USB 2.0 - Retail $29.99
