F.E.A.R. and video issues

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just got a Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800PRO 128MB. I have the latest Catalyst drivers from ATI's website. I can play F.E.A.R. for a few minutes (about 5), before it will lock up. Nothing but the video locks up though. Usually the image will freeze, then after a few seconds the screen will go yellow with other colors blotched around (hard to describe but it looks like the video card is physically crashing or something). Then the screen will flash black, return to the frozen image, and stay like that for a little bit before the VPU Recovery utility pops up and has me send a report to ATI. Then I have to restart and reset my resolution.

Also, while playing I see little black dots moving all around. Like an old film, but more square shaped dots. I'm not sure if it's supposed to look like this, but I'm guessing not.

I have my virus scanner disabled during the game. I'm going to try re-installing the driver right now and see what happens.

Did you connect the 4 pin power cable to the video card?
What Wattage is your PSU? If you dont know? Check the label at the PSU.
Power spikes from the PSU maybe.
Is it just this game giving you trouble?

How is the cards temperature under load? ( Check driver propertys)
The videocard fan behaves as it should ? no noises?
Are you sure your card is all the way down?
Get a new BIOS.

Download a new Chipset driver. If you don't know what chipset you got?
Download "Everest home" and check out the northbridge chipset. Then off to the chipset manufacturer for a new driver.

You dont have anything else, hooked up to that power cord to the card? Or using a "Y" split cable.

Uninstall that driver. Download "Driver Cleaner Pro 1.2. You will find it at guru 3 D, download section.

After using the driver cleaner. install the driver again. Or get an older one from guru 3d.

Have you tried hooking up the monitor to the other connector on the card, using the adapter? ( see picture)

Try disabling VPU Recovery. I've seen it cause crashes before, wouldn't be surprised if this is the same deal.

I found out it's the fan. It runs until it gets to Windows. Yes I have the power plugged in. And I've tried it hooked into the other. I'm almost positive that the card is overheating. The fan runs while it's starting up, then when it gets to Windows it stops.

Then it also could be something wrong with the driver.
As you say it starts and then stops when windows loads.

Why not try the "Warcats" from Xtreme?
Just go here and register for free.

Well, I would, except now after restarting I'm experiencing video corruption. I let it sit for about 15 minutes and tried again. Still nothing.

O.K. card replacement time. You have warranty time still?

Yeah I ordered it 6 days ago from NewEgg. I just sent it back now. Kinda ticks me off that this happened.

That I can well understand.
But as everthing else massproduced, there will be faulty ones somewhere down the line.
Just luck, that you still have the old MX card.
Then at least you can use the machine til you get a fresh 9800pro.

Yeah, as I said to my friend... It was bound to happen, with as many things as I order from NewEgg.
