I just registered OST just to get help on the problem that i am having right now. I often visit here to get some tips and infos on new stuffs. It's my first time to register any of technical support sites. I hope someone gives me an answer.
I planned a system. I had tight money under 500bucks. I didn't want it to be top edge tech or like that. I just wanted to have a system enough to do some gaming like DiabloII, CS, and some racing games, and some wordprocessing. So here comes my specs:
Case: Fong Kai 320 Black 300 watts
Mobo: ECS k7s5a SiS 735 socket A
Vcard: Gigabyte 32MB TNT2 M64 4X AGP
CPU: AMD Athlon TBird 1GHz 266MHz FSB Socket A PGA processor
RAM: Crucial Micron 256MB 32X64 PC2100 DDR
HD: WD 200BB Caviar 20GB
SCard: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! 5.1
Cooling: Cooler Master DP5-6H11 for AMD socket A
My problem came after assembling. I have done building several systems with Intel CPUs, but never done with AMD b4. But I dont think I made a mistake while assembling, since it was fairly easy. I put CPU and ram on mobo, and then mobo on the case. Then Vcard and Scard came on board. Then I connected all the IDE drives and cables and stuffs.
OK building is done and first booting was on next. I connected power cable behind the case. Since there was no monitor connector on the mobo, I conected monitor into TNT2, then you know LED of monitor would keep blinking with the case power was off.
I booted system for the first time, the system fan starts off circling and on. But CMOS setup wont show up on screen, the monitor LED keeps blinking. I suspected if the connector was loose but it was ok. Still it won't show anything on monitor, while LED keeps blinking. I opened the case and took the VCard off the mobo and stick it in again. Still. not wokring. Then I checked all the jumpers on mobo and IDE drives, they were ok.
Any possible reasons to cause this problem? What I suspect is that either the CPU or AGP VCard is defective. Someone please help me on this and save me a day.

Try removing all devices from the mobo and leave only the cpu+heatsink on it, then turn it on. The pc speaker should start making long beeps until you turn it off again, If it does that then the cpu is not dead.
If it doesn't make any sound then try adding the RAM too, some mobos don't make sound when the RAM isn't in it but I think this one does. If you put in the RAM (but no video card) it should make one long beep and a couple of short ones.
If this doesn't work you can also try the same with another PSU (if you have another one) or another piece of RAM (don't put SD and DDR on it at the same time, that doesn't work).

Well if you're not getting any beeps, it could be that something is shorted out. Try booting eith just the bare essentials installed. (Memory, CPU, and video only) Also, make sure the motherboard isn't touching the case somewhere.
If it still won't boot or beep, try setting the FSB to 200Mhz instead of 266. It may be you got a 200Mhz FSB model shipped to you by accident.
Post back and let us know how you're doing. If you're getting any beeps, post the sequence of beeps and we can identify the problem that way.

I did what you both told me.
I removed all the cables from the mobo, while power cables were all still connected to the IDE devices. I left CPU and the Cooling fan. Then powered on the case. No beeping. I added RAM, and i made sure it's the only RAM I added, it's 256 DDR from Crucial. No beeping. I added Vcard into AGP slot. No beeping.
I honestly say I am a newbie to hardware stuffs. Tell me how to change the FSB. The CPU is set to be 266 I think.

What they said. Start with only the motherboard, speaker, CPU and RAM. No cables or cards installed.

I am sorry if I am not catching you.
How do you turn on the mobo if the power cable is not conencted to the mobo. If this is not what you meant, is it ok to have power switch from the case onto the mobo and as well as pwer LED and other connectors.
and uh hey.. Kane. you from Ft. worth? pretty close from here. The Colony right next to Plano here.
thanx in advance

The FSB can only be changed in the BIOS in that board, to reset the BIOS (and set it back to the default value of 100/200Mhz), turn the pc off, find the little red jumper that is right next to the battery and set it from position 1-2 to 2-3, wait 10 secs, then put it back and try turning the pc on again.

I dont think that's an option since i cannot even into neither BIOS nor CMOS. All these components have never been used b4. I am tryign them for the first time and I dont see the very first screen on the monitor. But thanx for the tip. I am getting frustrated much now that I might have to return them or in any case i damaged either mobo or CPU, I have to throw them away and buy new ones.

You don't have to go into the BIOS to reset it, use the jumper on the motherboard.
If you can't get it to work, don't throw it away, you don't know if you damaged them or if they didn't work to begin with, just return them to the place you got them from.

Okay, you said there was no beeping ... first be absolutely sure that your little PC speaker cable that connects the mobo to the case is properly attached ... it may be giving you beeps and you just can't hear em because they're not properly attached...
I once had the problem when I was building one computer... there were no beeps, then I disconnected everything, and found out I improperly connected the PC speaker cable to the HDD LED pin ... then I heard the beeps and found out there was something wrong with the RAM ...

Don't worry about the LED's and such. Yes, the power switch and power supply also need to be connected.
That's where I live. I work in Downtown Dallas.

hey you know what.
there is no pc speaker connector on my case. i never connected speaker cuz there is none. what's going on.
Posted by: Canis Lupus
Hmmm, it should be part of the little cables at the bottom of the case ... located here:
http://www.opentechsupport.net/guid...ges/shots31.gif
Make sure you got them all accounted for ... that Fong Kai case should have at least five connectors at the bottom of the case...

there are only 4 cables from the case. I believe that one is missing. in your picture i see 2 sets of red+black. but in my case i see only 1 set. All other cables are counted for. should i return the case and get a new one?

He meant disconnect the power cables from the hard drive and CD-ROM's. If one of the drives is the problem, it should be removed from the equation. Also, it will take some strain off the power supply. Which could also be a factor if it is bad or not certified.

Can you tekll me what the labels on each of those connectors are?
Posted by: ElmStreet
power sw, reset sw, HDD LED, power LED
Posted by: Canis Lupus
Yeah, it seems your missing the big pc speaker connector
I dunno if this might be part of the problem or not, but if it's not inconvenience with you, I suggest returning the case for an exchange ...

representive from FOng Kai told me that the FK 320 case dont have speaker with it. Does that make sense to you?
Not to me.
Posted by: Canis Lupus
Errr, that doesn't make sense at all ... almost all computer cases come with PC speakers, otherwise where would the beep come out from!
Anyway, I am sure there were five connectors on my FongKai 320 when I built my computer ... here is a picture of the case last year, straight out of the packaging box...
http://www.tolitz.com/images/ots/fongkai320.jpg
And attached is a closer look at the connectors themselves ... if you count them, they're five ...
So I dunno ...

mine has only 4 ractangle looking black thingy. arg.
ok i asked a friend to get me a speaker. could you tell me where is the speaker going to be so that i can ATTACTCH THE DAMN SPEAKER ONTO THE CASE MYSELF? sorry i am a bit much frustrated about this. A failure gives me sick.
Posted by: Canis Lupus
PC speakers are usually found in the front/bottom ... at least, that's where the speaker connector on my FK320 seems to be coming from...

it was a long day yesterday.
i got it solved.
the reason was the reset button.
i asked my friend, who was an expert in this area, and he came over. we went through the mobo and stuffs. the memory was tested for this mobo and no problem. we check if mobo is touching the case, no problem. but somehow we figured out that the mobo sent signal when we unhooked up the little cables from the case, such as HDD LED, power switch and on. we try each one of them and whenever we had the reset switch was hooked up, the mobo dont do a thing. so it must be the reset cable.
we opened the front cover of the case and then the little tiny reset button fell out. it looked broken, and we found out that this tiny little button was SHORT all the time. so we removed the reset button(as i am writting this post on my new system, my case dont have a tiny little reset button) and i wont need it cuz i am using winxp pro.
so.. it's working now. thanx to all of you answered to ma question, and i really appreciate you all. thanx guys. i mean it.
