Effect of RAID 0 on World of Warcraft

I play World of Warcraft a good deal, but I have a slight problem. Whenever I enter a populated city it seems as though the objects don't load quickly enough leaving strange things, Such as my Character wont show up or other characters won't show up, There will be a shadow, but no one casting the shadow. This goes on for a few seconds and after a bit all the characters and things finally load. Its kind of strange. I was wondering if it could be because the hard drive fails to cache the information on the RAM quick enough for it to be displayed. With Christmas coming up I have been thinking about RAID 0 to solve this problem and others to make the game run more smoothly. I currently have a 7200 RPM, 2MB Cache, ATA/100 drive. Do you think its possible that the hardrive could be the source of this problem, or is it possible that RAM is really the contributing factor?

You've got it backwards... the RAM caches data from your disk.
Get more RAM, and/or a better video card. Or a better internet connection... or a better WoW server.

What I meant was that the Data from the Hard Drive is transfered and stored on the RAM. My video card is fine for this game and a cable connection is more than adequate for World of Warcraft.

How much RAM do you have? I have 1GB and WoW loads seamlessly when travelling around cities. Depending on how much you have, adding more RAM would probably be more beneficial than setting up a RAID.

Thats not your system doing that, thats the server. Nothing you can do about that. The same thing happens to me, when I first login to a large city or hearth to one.
I have 2gb of ram and WoW has never used over 430mb of ram, thats sitting in OG durring the heaviest peak hours. (which btw, I wish they would have a better cache system for people with more ram )

And what video card would that be?
Unfortunately, a good internet connection doesn't necessarily mean a good route to the WoW server, and more unfortunately, it doesn't necessarily mean a good WoW server to begin with..
In any case, you really shouldn't need to worry about disk accesses UNLESS you don't have enough memory in your system. Most games today run almost entirely off memory unless the machine running them doesn't have enough memory and needs to constantly swap data out of the disk. And if that were the case, I'd just buy more RAM - it's cheaper, easier to install, and will give you a much better performance boost.

Raid wont solve that problem. You wold be better off, with a 36 gig W.D. Raptor. 10.000 RPM, for your OS and games if you want faster read / write. And as fast RAM, your mobo can munster.

Thanks for the information. I have a gig of ram, and I could have sworn World of Warcraft used more then that, but OK. Thanks again guys.

The problem withno character showing up has been linked to userinterface mods...Delete those and see if that doesnt solve it. Then start upgrading :P
