NFS Most Wanted runs extremely choppy please help!

Before I go into the problem, let me provide you with a little background and history of my experience with NFS.
System specs:
p4 2.7ghz, 1.5g RAMs, video: radeon 9800pro 128mb (driver updated)
First of all, let me just say that my system is entirely capable of running games that have or will come out before 2006.
Last year at this time, I first installed NFS (need for speed) Underground 2 and it ran very well. I played the game for probably 2 months and uninstalled it. Between then and this year's September, I did nothing major to my system, hardware- and software-wise, other than adding an additional 1 gig of rams, and some window updates.
Then this past September, I felt the itch to race again, so I reinstalled NFS UG2 again. However, as soon as I run the game, everything became EXTREMELY choppy. It takes a whole 5-10 second for a "click" from my mouse to register in game. Menu is close to impossible to navigate because the game "reaction time" was very long. I didn't even bother going into a race, because I know that will either cause the game to crash, or my computer to freeze. I decided to put the problem aside and wait for most wanted to come out in November.
Well, as some of you may know, Most Wanted has just come out this week. I got the game and installed it, hopeful that the problem I had experienced with UG2 was gone. Boy was I wrong! The game ran extremely choppy right from the start. If you want a better idea of what's happening with my game, watch the video I recorded (30 sec).
http://www.rit.edu/~wwc3757/PICT0001.MOV
Before you dive into any conclusion, know this: I had nothing major running in the background. I have been playing games such as Madden 06, COD2, HL2, WoW, B&W2, AOEIII, Ultimate Spiderman, Doom3, etc. on this system and they all work out fine. Only the NFS series give me headaches. My drivers are all updated. I defragged my HDD recently. And there's no IRQ conflicts that I know of. I've done a complete virus/ad-scan on my HDD and cleaned out everything. Yet, the problem still persists.
I'm pretty sure that this problem has little to no relation with my video/sound cards and drivers. The problem seems so isolated that I'm very tempted to dive into the registries and start wrecking havoc (but I won't :P).
I have no idea what's going on. I've been talking with EA support and they are as useless as ever before. Please, if anyone know how to fix this problem, post the solution here. I'm open to anything but reformatting my system (the sure-fire way to fix the problem.)

Wow, alright, that's quite the choppy clip there. The only thing I can think of is if you've got an on-access virus scanner running that you might want to disable while you play it. You might want to try older drivers too. I'm not sure where you can get 'em so I'm sure someone will post a link for ya.

Well, there ya go. Thanks goranpaa, I'll be sure to bookmark that myself. Never know if I'll need it myself.
Posted by: goranpaa
You're welcome.
Guru 3D, is a very nice site if you wanna find both new, older and modified videocard drivers. And they also got a bunch of useful tools and benchmark tests for videocards.
Posted by: Xpid3r
My friend's playing this game with the same ATI driver I'm running on...
Posted by: goranpaa
O.K. But does your friend have the exact same card as you? Same manufacturer also?
Posted by: Xpid3r
yes he has a 9800 lpro 128
Posted by: goranpaa
And you have used a driver cleaner, after uninstalling the previous driver?
Posted by: Xpid3r
No I didn't. Whenver I install a new driver, i uninstall the old one first then restart and install the new one. Even if the drivers conflict, shouldn't the other games i play be affected as well? This is something taht's only buggin NFS MW and UG2, and i have no idea what it is...
Posted by: FadedMaster
Some drivers contain fixes for certain games that prove to be a problem. For example, BF2 used to be a pain with ATI Radeon 9800's until the latest Catalyst drivers. You will find a lot of fixes like that listed in the ChangeLog (not sure if ATI uses that term) of the drivers.
Posted by: Xpid3r
I dunno, i hope so. I have absolutely no idea what's causing such a choppy performance... I really hope it's a driver issue because it can be a quick fix.
Posted by: Xpid3r
I'm quite confused with the site http://downloads.guru3d.com/
If i want to find a driver that came out around nov/dec last year, how do i know which one to dl? Also, I don't know if i should be looking for ATI catalyst 32 bit, 64 bit, or modified?
Posted by: goranpaa
The higher number the newer driver. But if you wanna find the exact version release date. Then you have a BIG job ahead! It should be enough, if you rolled back just a couple of versions or some more.
It is 32 bit you should have . 64 bit is for 64 bit version of Windows.
You could try one of the modified also. They are often better than the orginal drivers. Omega is a good modifier.
Also download Driver Cleaner Proffesional. Google for it. Use this cleaner after you have uninstalled the old driver. Your problem, may be from not getting the previous driver completely removed. I.e, you may have some old driver pieces still in there?
But read the instructions carefully. before you use it!
Posted by: Xpid3r
i just reformatted my comp and problem persists... driver-hunt time!
Posted by: Xpid3r
Yeah.. it's not the driver's problem. I tried 4 different catalyst and they didn't change a thing. It's something else that's causing the problem.

Edit: Forget this one.

Hi,
Im having the same problem. I can play any new game on my machine, (Quake 4, Half Life2, Doom 3), but i cant play NFS MW and NFS U2, its choppy. Some of my friends have much worse computer than me and they can play NFS MW with no problem. I tried almost everything (drivers change, reinstalling game etc.) but nothing helps. I cant play even on 640x480 without strange chopping. I have Geforce 5700 128MB and 512ram. Cant it be fixed with some memory setting? Thx for any help.
Posted by: Xpid3r
I stil can't fix it. Reformatted, updated everything except my sound card because it's OEM. I can't think of anything but the out-dated sound driver that's causing this problem....
Posted by: goranpaa
Xpider.
If you know what manufacturer your soundcard is? Then head over to their homesite and download the driver.
If you dont know? Check in Windows device manager.
Neroden and Xpider.
Try heading into BIOS.
This you do, by tapping the "Delete key" at first boot screen.
Then scroll your way, by using the arrow keys. Look for a menue, called "Graphic aparture size. And set it to the higest value ( Probably 256mb). Save the setting in BIOS, before you leave.
This may help, as your video card is able to borrow some megs from the RAM, when needed.
At lest, it should help some.
Also try a modified driver from here:
http://www.tweaksrus.com/
You just have to register for free, to be able to download. It is the 32 bit version you should have.
Also Google for "Driver Cleaner Professional" and download it.
Uninstall the old driver. And then use the cleaner. But read the instructions carefully first!

I too have the same problem but im running a NVIDIA GFORCE 6600GT card 3.2 gig CPU 1 gig of ram and can run anything on the planet ....no problem! I can't even run NFS Porsche unleashed, it runs just like the Underground 2 and Most wanted! I have no clue whats going on.
Posted by: goranpaa
What settings have you done for the video card and resoloution?
What quality settings for the game?
Posted by: dancemachine
I can't even set up anything because as soon as the game loads its so choppy its almost impossible to maneuver through! This seems to be a problem with Direct X or something because I had this kind of problem with a game a couple of years ago and it was Direct x related. All I did was install a older version of X and it was fine! But not this one...by the way im running Direct X 9c.
Posted by: Xpid3r
do you have all sound/video driver updated? How many partitions does your hdd have? i have the exact same problem...
Posted by: dancemachine
Yep I SURE DO! One!
Posted by: goranpaa
If you don't play on line. shut down firewall, antivirus and antispyware. This may sometimes help.
Posted by: lcousins
I cant help think the only way we're going to solve this one is for everyone who is having this problem to list the make and model of all their components, windows version, what av software and other system software (eg spyware, maintenance etc) they are running. Maybe once enough people have listed we maybe be able to spot a common element.

k i am having this problem, only the cinematics are choppy, nothing else i can play the game smooth enough but for some reason FMA and cinematics are choppy as shit
i have a Geforce 4000, its horrible but it should be able to view the cinematics, its not even working hard, my fans arent spinning, and other indicators that its not overworked
my friend suggested it might be a codec issue, but i dont know what codec NFS MW uses
EDIT: for the last guy that posted, im using NOD32
Posted by: goranpaa
What exactly do you mean by you're fans aint spinnning?!
Posted by: numenor
Hi, i have the same problem like pmouth...can play but can't watch the video...
I have GeForce Fx 5200 with new installed ForceWare 81.95 display drivers.... (old removed with Driver Cleaner Pro etc.etc) i have also enough ram memory :512Mb ddr 400. I close all background programs, disconected and disabled all and everything i was able to....
I read in the Readme.txt (in the game folder) that the low virtual memory can cause choppy video sequence...but....that didn't help.
So i can play... it's working excellent on 800x600 with all available effects...on max and high -(afcourse no shadow effect, and no Full-Screen Anti-Aliasing ) but video sequences are killing me...i managed to skip intro by renaming some files....it's too choppy i can't even interrupt it by clicking....but new carrier intro is ...
I tried almost everithing except preinstalling xp...
If enyone have some idea.....
thanks
Posted by: goranpaa
Then try another, older driver. 77.13. and 77.76 often works very well.
Posted by: numenor
Drivers I had before, were 77.77 and the same thing happened.... Then i tried new one... with no luck
Ok, i'm starting to hate this game, all games are working fine, but nfs:mw...noo
Man, what about arrow problem, it's dissapearing if there is anything in background... I personaly dont have this problem because i already remove everything from background ...but i saw a lot of people who has.
And back to begining...
Anyone any other idea?

The only thing I can think of is to get a new videocard. The FX 5200, and the MX 4000, that Pmouth have for that matter, is'nt the speediest videocards on earth.
A SAPPHIRE 100575-RED Radeon 9600XT 256MB 128-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - OEM $93.00. newegg, webshop.
Is a way faster card and also have good support for directX 9.0C. And have enough memory to even play really advanced strategy games, without problems.
Posted by: numenor
afcourse, you are deffinatly right, but i don't intend to spend any money only because need for speed most wanted wont play video... since almost every other game can work... i will wait a while for shoping, unless Prince of persia - Two Thrones won't work... .')
OK 5200 is very slow card, but nfs is working fine, only video is choppy, i realy doubt that card is slow for the video but not for the gameplay.... i think it's the problem with the drivers....
Oh, by the way i borrowed Ati 9600 pro just to try and it's working perfect.... :P and i notice something about SmartGart settings- i can't set agp speed -8x, not even 4x, i'm sure that my motherboard support agp8x and i'm sure that is enabled in Bios... So what's going on???
Posted by: goranpaa
As I dont own a Radeon myself ( never had), I really can't tell you. You will have to wait for someone with more experiense of those cards to help you there.
But if you can tell me what motherboard you have? I can try help you find out what AGP speed you got?
If you dont know what motherboard you have? Download Everest Home.
Posted by: numenor
it's asus a7n8x-x, and it's supporting agp 8x, and i check that is agp 8x = enabled...
Posted by: goranpaa
O.K. Sorry, I cant be of any more help to you than this.
Posted by: numenor
thanks anyway.

You probably need to install the drivers for your AGP port. The best thing to do would be to download the newest ones from the site of your motherboard manufacturer, since the ones you (should) have on CD are likely to be alot older.
Xpid3r, you could also give this a try if you haven't already.
Posted by: goranpaa
If you dont know what chipset you got? Download / use Everest Home.
Look under "chipset" and "northbridge chipset. And then as Outlaw says, head over to either the motherboard manufacturers home or the chipset manufacturers.
If you have a Nforce chipset it is Nvidia home.
Posted by: numenor
Thanks, i solve the problem, i reinstall Nforce Gart drivers 5.10 and averything is working fine... Unfortunately with ati 9600 pro...which is borrowed... but my GeForce 5200 and nfs:mw video is still dont like eachother...
Posted by: goranpaa
It could be worth, to put up 90 bucks for a 9600XT 256mb, later on at least. Even your old games will be like new again. And the 9600XT is faster than the Pro version.
And as you saw, no problems with NFS.
And looking at the graphics from that game, I belive, it could verywell be, that the FX 5200 doesn't have the support for the shaders and stuff in that game. The grapics, seems pretty advanced to me.
Here is what one reviewer wrote, that says something about the level of the graphics:
The game looks good. If you would replace the game with a woman, this is the kind of women that will make you turn your head and slam into a street light. This is no exaggeration. The game has everything but Pixel Shader 3.0. Specular lighting, bump mapping, real time shadows, extensive mipmapping, you name it. At the highest levels you will often crash just because you get carried away and lost yourself in the scenery.
Posted by: numenor
i'll think about it... here in the stores 9600xt is 130 euro... so if i order from someone to bring me from outside... )))
Posted by: goranpaa
That is a good idea. And check out Sapphire, Powercolor and Club 3D. They are very good at making Radeons. And also among the cheapest.
Posted by: Xpid3r
Argh... I hate this... game still not working. I guess I'll try and find a updated driver for my AGP port.
Do you think partitioning my HDD and installing the game on the new partition would help? There are people out there with the same problem actually bought new HDDs and made their game works... but that seems a bit too drastic of a solution to me.
Posted by: goranpaa
No, that should't be nessisary.
But a new chipset driver or a No CD exe maybe?
Posted by: Hondaum
Hey i had the same problem of pmouth and numenor...
well, first of all, my english is not that good so i'm just tryin' to help you guys but maybe i may not be so clear... whatever... lol
So, i was having a problem with the cinematics as well, the game runs perfectly but the movies from the game were choppy... choppy enough to turn the game borin' as hell. I tried to reinstall all drivers (video, mainboard, sound, directx, etc...) and even tried to reinstall my Windows (Xp Professional SP1) and nothing worked out... But, today i was googlin', tryin' to find out the light (lol) and then i realized that i haven't updated all the drivers i had to. So, i opened up nVidia's website and downloaded the latest nForce 2 drivers (different from the Video and Sound drivers).
In fact, i just updated my GART, ATA, SmBus drivers and restarted my computer! Now the game works real fine =)
Hope this little reminder help you guys...
Oh, my computer:
Mobo: Asus A7n8x Deluxe
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (Fsb 333Mhz)
RAM: 512 Mb VData DDR 400
Video: MSI GeForce FX5200 TDR128 (128Mb/128Bits)
HD: 80Gb ATA 133 7200rpm
That's it...
Keep up the good work out here =)
Thanks
c' ya

Hey Guys, I figured out what the problem and fixing it is easy if you have the $$$ its a simple matter of pixel shaders, EA are being right b'stards along with a few other companies by making software using the very latest upgrades but not allowing for any backwards compatability forcing users to go out and either get a far older card that only has the shader 1.0 and nothing else or going out and buying the very latest $500+ card, I wouldn't be suprised if Nvidia are also involved in this scheme which to me, almost borders on illegal in some aspects.
And guess what, you guys will have the same problems with other EA games and in fact sooner or later with all newer releases unless they add support for older shaders, I have proven this fact since FIFA 2006 also has the very same issue.
My comp spec, all have the very latest driver updates
AMD 64 3400
1 gig 400mhz DDR ram
ATi Radeon 9800 pro (Offical Version)
Soundblaster Audigy 2
Let me break it down for you guys, I originally ran into this problem with MoH: Pacific Assault a while back when I first played Pacific Assault it ran extremely choppy bordering on unplayable but it had a option menu before the game loaded, and I noticed the options to use Pixel Shader 1.0 or 2.0 and the default setting was 2.0 so I changed it to 1.0 and the game worked perfectly, since then I did some research and alot of graphics cards from 2002 and 2004 don't have very good or limited support for Pixel Shader 2.0 and now 3.0, in fact trying to run a game using those would result in extremely choppy graphics. This isn't a driver issue at all or a Direct X issue, its simply the fact that EA isn't giving you the options to run the game on the graphics card that you guys own and to me, I think thats BS but again I wouldn't be suprised if Nvidia are the ones pulling the strings in the background forcing people to spend money on new cards.
Problems with shaders on various EA games. To run these games you need a graphics card that is fully compliant with these shaders, to be honest the specs on the box SHOULD clearly state this fact.
Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault (Pixel Shader 2)
Battlefield 2 (Pixal Shader 2)
Need for Speed: Most Wanted (Pixel Shader 2)
Fifa 2006 (Pixal Shader 2)
The first two though, do have the options to use Pixel shaders, the latter of the two I couldn't find any options or anyway to force the games to use the older shader hence, the game will not work for me, and most likely alot of other people out there.
Posted by: Outlaw
I also have a 9800 Pro and I played through Need for Speed: Most Wanted without any framerate problems at all. I think there might be more to it than that...
Posted by: Comptech
What Radeon 9800 to you have? Official version?
Posted by: Outlaw
Well... I'm not sure, actually. The thing was damn noisy, so I ordered a passive cooler for it. It consists of 2 huge heatsinks; they're almost as big as the entire card itself, and go on the top and bottom, so I can't read any of the text on the card anymore. The card is about 3 times thicker with those things on it, and it renders my first PCI slot useless (but I don't like using the slot next to the video card anyway).
I know it was one of the cheapest there was at the time. If my memory serves me right it was a Powercolor. Can't say for sure though, and I'm definitely not taking it apart again to check.

Hi everyone, I am having the same problem that NFS MW AND HP2 aren't playable at all. I tried all different drivers and nothing. The thing is that HP2 used to play just fine before, a while ago. If anyone has a solution or something please post it up.
