well ive been looking into getting a credit card (yeah i know i made a thread about this like 2 years ago, but then a debt card solved my problem... now i want a credit card)

well i need a credit card that gives frequent flier miles(that dont expire-key thing here) and id REALLY prefer no annual fees and low interest rates... + any other goodies they give now adays, like that 35cents back for each gallon of gas u buy... but anyways in my searches ive found this one to look pretty good the 2nd one down ummm this one Capital One Bank Visa Rebate Platinum also heres the side info

Restrictions:
Other: Receive 5,000 bonus miles after first year & 10,000 after second year. Earn one mile for every dollar spent. Five ways to redeem miles: Travel, Cash, Merchandise, Charitable Donations, Certificate Rewards. APRs may vary depedning upon creditworthiness.

Rates are available by:
Online

Available in:
All 50 states.

anyway any advice from the older people with credit cards would be helpfull

Thee, can you expect anyone to take these question threads seriously anymore?

My advice, you don't need a credit card, get some more education, get a job, and lay off the weed.

Tecil, don't forget the fact that he's most likely not going to be approved for a credit card, much less one with the benefits he's looking for.

Thee, you have to have a decent job, a good amount of money in the bank, and a good current credit record in order to get a card like you're describing.

You'll probably qualify for a "beginner" card, with a $500-to-$1000 limit, no kickbacks, and a relatively high interest rate.

Let me guess: You were gonna buy alot of stuff for other people with that creditcard, then get paid back and still have the flyer miles? Hey, that almost sounds like another money-making scheme.

You do realize that the conversion rate is usually 1 physical mile for every 4 "miles", right? Which means if you want to be able to fly across the country, you're going to have to rack up $24,000 in credit just to get a round trip.

What do you plan to do with miles anyway? Where are you trying to go?

I think he wants to go visit my mafia relatives.

no, i was just gonna buy the stuff i regularly buy with cash with it, then at the end of the month pay it off...

no i got family in chicago/florida/newyork actually all the of east coast

seriously wtf are you guys good for anymore? like 2 years ago id ask this question and you guys would tell me now yall just crack jokes

Posted by: uh...ok

Hahahaha, it's not like we're supposed to be "good for anything" to you... you could very much do the research yourself instead of making us do it for you.

2 years ago we may have indeed answered your question, but little did we know then.

In any case, if you're really interested in using a credit card to build up credit, you won't find anything that doesn't charge an annual fee AND has kickbacks AND doesn't charge you a high interest rate.

You might be interested in something like an Amazon.com credit card though. It may be more practical than saving miles for a trip somewhere. The conversion rate sucks even more though.

actually uhawk i have been researching this, i just figured you guys would have more insight on it, but i guess as usual its just flaming

how in the hell did i get a card that he's describing then?

4 years ago I had just turned 18 and got my first beginner card with a 500 limit. Not 3 months later, here came the gold and platinum, and i had only used my card once for a little $20 purchace, and my wages were below poverty level. lol

only thing that took awhile to get was the frequent flyer miles. i think that took a year before someone sent me something with that feature.

Credit card? If you aren't getting it for the purpose of improving your credit rating, then don't EVER consider getting one... work hard, pay cash, or use an ATM/Check/Debit card...

I'm speaking from experience here... it's the holiday season, so they are sending out dozens of "pre-approved" credit card offers hoping for some poor souls to lap it up.

Yeah, sure, people ALWAYS say they'll use credit cards wisely, and pay it at the end of the month. But people are procrastinators, and if you're living from paycheck to paycheck, you'll eventually be thinking "ah, I can probably pay that next month" or "meh, I'll just pay it in three months before it gains interest" ... and before you know it, you'll be stressed out trying to cope with overdue credit card payments... worst case scenario is a sucky FICA score, sucky credit rating, and even bankruptcy...

People spend more than what they earn. That's a fact. Credit cards make it easier to do this... don't fall into that trap at such an early age...

I'm speaking as someone who is now working in the financial services industry, so it's up to you whether you take me seriously, Thee

laggy i understand, and the two main reasons to get a credit card is for the flyer miles and to improve my no credit status... the way i figure it the sooner i get credit the faster i can get a house(when im like 25)

I bought my first house when I was 20 with NO credit cards in my name. I had a full time, decent paying job, and the only debt I had was a car payment.

Posted by: TheeMon

how tecil? you bought as in you own it? how much u pay for it?

fyi im a 19yr old full time college student/full time job with crappy pay + no real debt

Posted by: Tecil

It was a 1300sq foot 3bedroom 2 bath house that I paid $85,000 for. After I got married we lived there for a couple more years. Then we had our new house built outside of Boise.

At the time I had worked a couple years in a repair shop fixing computers for $12 and hour.

Posted by: TheeMon

did you get a loan or something? if not howd u get 85k at 20? + i thought u could only get loans with good credit

Posted by: Tecil

Yes I got a home loan. And like I said the only credit I had at the time was one car I had paid off and a second that I was making payments on at the time.

Posted by: Bishop

it's possible to have good credit without actually having a card.

Also, if you're paying a large enough down payment, preferably in cash, the loan factor is mitigated significantly.

mind you, I'm used to dealing with criminals, err, banks.

Call me crazy, but shouldn't you be talking to your parents about establishing a good credit history?

If your answer is anything other than "Why yes, Gunslinger, you are absolutely right, why did I not bow to your infinite wisdom sooner", then you are clearly wrong.

And maybe stupid.

Posted by: AltronHGX

full time college student and full time job at the same time, eh

Posted by: Gunslinger

What?

Posted by: AltronHGX

that's a lot of time

gun, my parents know next to nothing about good credit... remember im from bfe, first person in my family to goto college, my parents arnt what you call educated

Posted by: Gunslinger

Do they own a home? A car? Have they made payments on anything in the past? Have they ever had a loan?

If yes, chances are, they know what they need to know.

you dont need a degree to know how to handle a loan or a credit card

Posted by: redwench

best way to get a good credit card is to have good credit. and the easiest way to do that is to get a beginner card, and make small necessary purchases ( no xmas shopping) on it and pay it off when the statement comes, if not sooner.

for example, as youre in college, just use the beginner card for gas, books, and emergencies. as soon as statement comes, pay in full.

Posted by: Cettie

Also, avoid Capitol One at all costs, even if you have million dollar credit. They reek.
