System.exe Process acting oddly

Hey;

Well here's whats happening, I'm running an IBM T42 laptop. The system.exe process likes to jump up 10-20% cpu usage at random times, when it does this my system hangs for a second, its not much but it usually happens in bursts of 3-4 times at once, then it will go away for completely random amount of time, ranging from 5 minutes to 45 minutes. It doesn't sound like much but it gets REALLY annoying at time. I've tried switching some software around, I've done anti-virus, Spyware scans, defrags, and full system reinstallation. Nothing seems to work. Also I looked around alittle before coming here, and I noticed some people having the same kind of problem with laptops, and it was related to thier battery. But that was in Win2000. I'm running WinXP Pro, with ALL the updates including SP2. Anyone got some ideas?

Thanx

Ph0enix ,

Is it preparing to hiberate at these times? Disable all that stuff and see what happens.

No, it's running full out, no hibernation, i would have to either close the lid or use the function keys to get it to do that, my screen saver has to come on for at least 10 minutes before it even "Sleeps"
