issue with 2nd drive

I recently installed a new motherboard and a fresh install of XP on a new hard drive. My trouble is with a 2nd drive that I used for storage. Its a Maxtor D740X-6L internal IDE drive thats set up as a slave. When I boot the blue screen appears with the paraphrased message ...drive d file system fat32 ..needs to be checked for consistency. After the check disk it tells me its a "non-windows XP disk". When I continue windows takes a very long time to finish loading and the drive appears in My Computer but is not accessible. What can be the problem ? I really need the files on this drive. Can anyone help shed some light on this issue ?

sounds like the HD went to the big thermaltake case in the sky... Its ok, he's looking down on you and making "whirrr" noises. But seriously, try right clicking on it , going to properties, run a "check this disc for errors" scandisk session. If you really want to verify its a paperweight, try getting into the revocery console from your xp disc and running a chkdsk on it. Good luck..
