ECC/Registered Ram question

1)Currently I have 2 sticks of 512MB PC3200 Corsair XMS ECC Registered Ram. The computer I was using this in went fubar and I had to get rid of it =[, so now I have this expensive ram here and I'm trying to build a new computer. Most of the motherboards I'm looking at don't require ECC or Registered Ram like my old SK8V did, and i'm wondering if I can toss the RAM I have into the new board.
2)I'm not hemorrhaging money, so if I was going to add more RAM I wouldn't want to have to buy more of the ECC/Reg type, since its pricy. Would it matter if I had 2 sticks of 512MB ECC/Reg and another 2 sticks of non-ECC/Unbuffered RAM (assuming the Mobo doens't require ECC/Reg).
3)If the different RAM sticks had different timing, I assume that would cause problems. Is this soemthing I could fix via BIOS, or are most computers these days smart enough to set all the timing to the same thing?

1. What CPU do you got? And Video card ? AGP or PCI Express? What kind of mobo are you looking for?
2: I THINK it will work. But not 100% though.
3. If the timings does'nt differ too much. You can force the timings in BIOS.
You may also have to crank up the DDR Reference Voltage a notch or two. And if the PC refuses to boot. You will have to try other timings.
But run Memtest 8 cycles minimum, after you have done the adjustments in BIOS. This to make sure your settings are stable.

O.k. so you have a ASUS SK8V socket 940 AMD.
Is it a PCI Express mobo you want? or AGP

Right now I'm just using an oldie but goodie comp i've had for like 5 years, but i'm working on a completely new system
I was looking to get one of the DFI boards, socket 939, PCI-E, NO SLI, running a socket 939 FX53 (I sent the socket 940 back to AMD and they sent me a socket 939, nice of them, no?). The SK8V is the board that went bad, so I sent that back to ASUS and they sent be back a K8N-DL (they were out of all other socket 940 boards). Unfortunantly, the K8N-DL doesn't work with the FX53, so i'm trying to hock it on EBay and buy a new mobo.
Right now I have my eye on this one:

Video card i'm look at is the GF 7800 GT (PCI-E).
Couple of 250GB in SATA RAID 0 are also in the blueprints.
Here are the RAM's i'm look at. I have 2 of the $143 and am looking at adding 2 of the $97.:

Sorry about not being clear at first.

The DFI UT is a nice mobo. And if you are into heavy overclocking experiments it is even nicer.
Just have in mind, that the new DFI.s are'nt particulary fond of Maxtors harddrives. And the BIOS update, can be a bit tricky. Suggest you go to DFI:s forum. Before you flash a new BIOS.
That RAM is very nice. Also check out G.Skill RAM.
And the videocard is'nt much to say about. It speaks for itself lol.

P.s. If I may come with a suggestion, regarding that RAID.?
I think, that getting a SATA II PCI controller card. And a couple of Hitachi Deskstar SATA II or Seagate Barracuda SATA II, will give you a better performance and a less risky setup.
Also have in mind, that you will need a PSU, that is high quality and around 450 to 500W to run that 7800GT card. Antec for ex.

currently I have an Ultra 500W(at least) modular PSU. Its not fantastic, had a few problems keeping the plug to stay in a CD-ROM drive, but its nifty. On the SK8V, i had a total of 3 250GB HDD's. Off the top of my head, i don't remember the brand. it was either 2 WD's and a Maxtor or vice versa (one IDE and 2 SATA). I keep a lot of movies and music on my computer, so wadds of space is nice.
I'm just going to try the HDD's I have right now, because its a pain in the butt trying to sell em. Thanks for the advice though, if things don't work out, i'll try to get my hands on those drives.
If I had a money tree, i'd be trying everything, but sadly, genetics hasn't come that far yet.

allright, found out I have 2 250GB Maxtor DiamondMax SATA150 and 1 250GB WD Caviar IDE. I'm assuming those drives won't work, or at least not great on a SATA II controller card. I'm not going to buy anything yet, just doing research.

The SATA 2 controller is backwards compatible with SATA 1.
But that W.D. ATA is'nt.
Another idea, would be to get a 74 gig W.D. Raptor 10.000 RPM SATA 1. And use this for the games and O.S. Then use the other drives as storage and for apps, that don't really need the speed of the Rap. I started with such a configuration on my 36. gig Raptor. And man is that drive fast! Just a bit noisy though. lol. And the Raptor, SATA 1 is as fast as the SATA II. Some times faster.

thanks, you've been a big help!

You're welcome. Just fun to be able to help you out a bit. Now you just have to sit down and ponder over the possibilitys.
Would be fun to hear from you when you have finished your new rig.

you will generally not be able to use ecc memory in a nonecc board.

Thats not good news. I'm gonna call the mobo company before I make any purchases, otherwise I guess its to Ebay with my ram so I don't have to eat the whole $300 =P

furthering what Redwench said, unless they have really changed things on the bios side and come up with fabulous new technolgies, you cannot use parity memory with nonparity memory. The additional circuitry that performs the parity checks will only cause/experience errors with nonparity memory (parity ram has a different data stream pattern that nonparity to say it simply).
