hi,
At my job it's become a very important issue, liscensing that is. Since we are repair computers for a charge, we can't use a variety or programs that most people would normally use, for instance Spybot. We can't use it.
So what free programs do you all use for diagnostics and repair?
Right now, legally we can use
Ad-Aware, Trend Anti-Spyware demo, hijackthis and PE builder. althong with etrust anti-virus demo, which is not much to work with. Any good open source ones you guys know of or use? Anything along those lines?

should one inquire why a professional computer repair company refuses to pay liscensing for diagnostic software? you obviously paid for adaware, thats free only to home users as well.

Because it's probably not a "professional" computer repair company, but probably a group of friends starting something up.

I work for a company that repairs computers for a fee.. and we use Spybot.. Adaware.. spyware blaster.. and AVG on a daily bassis.. the only one that I know of that is NOT free to anyone is AVG and that is only free to home users and maybe not for profits and educational.. not sure on that last part. but for the individual user it is free..

This is a free file recovery software, that to my knowlege is a good one.

Also such test softwares as Memtest and Prime 95, torture test. Is good for checking the RAM health and stability and Prime 95 for the PC:s overall stability.
Everest Home is a good software. When you wanna find out the hardware configuration in a specific PC / Laptop.

We have a few programs liscenced to us. And, we can't get any additional, until next year. Which sucks, so I took an interest in seeing what is freely available.

aside from open source stuff, almost all software thats free for the home user requires liscensing for a business, including spybot
i would consider such programs to be part of the cost of doing business in that field, theyre not luxuries like a better coffemaker in the break room.

Can't you use the programs already on your clients' computers? Like if they had a virus, couldn't you use their antivirus program? And the same for spy/adware?
But back to the original topic, here are some freeware programs.
MS Malicous Software Removal tool

MS RegClean - registry cleaner

I can't offer any advice on spyware programs that are totally free but I do know a useful tool that has assisted me in removing spyware from infected pc's.
The startup control panel. http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
Very simple yet useful program that lets you remove startup entries. A lot of spyware can be disabled by removing it from the registry. This program also saves entries so you can reload something removed if you make a booboo.
It's a time saver if you guys have to edit the registry manually for some things. Some really nasty stuff you may need to remove with this from safe mode, but it usually does the job provided IE is cleaned and purged of its demons.
The startup monitor on that page is also useful although it's more of a prevention tool against trogan-like spyware than a spyware removal tool.
