I have a HP Pavilion a316n desktop computer and when I go to boot up a black screen comes up and I get a continuos beep from the motherboard and on the screen it says I only have 64mb of ram, when indeed I have 256mb of ram. When I pull the memory stick out and try to boot up I get a beep about every 3 seconds.
could this be a memory problem or another problem any help would be apprciated
Thanks anchorpysher

Continious speaker beeps is a warning, somthings wrong with your RAM.
If you just have 1 stick of RAM and take it out. You wont be able to boot the PC!
Probably you will need a new RAM stick for your Pavilion.
This Ram is a good and decently priced brand.
CORSAIR ValueSelect 256MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 333 (PC 2700) System Memory - OEM $23.50
CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 333 (PC 2700) System Memory - OEM $42.25
Prices: newegg, webshop.
As HP Pavilion a16n, use Windows XP as native operating system. The 512mb RAM stick, would be your best choise.

Have you tried reseating the RAM (instead of removing it) and then turning the computer on again?

anchorpysher ,
Yep, take it out and put it back in. try in different order and stuff. Also run the Window Memory Tester on it. Which is free from Microsoft.

yes I tried to take it out and reseat it but nothing changed...How can I run a memory test on the stick when I can't boot the computer up?
Thanks,
