Counter Strike: Source FPS Laggy?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: Omnislash124
Hey all, it's me again. I have a question to those who play Counter Strike: Source out there. I think my system should suffice to run Counter Strike: Source at a decent FPS (somewhere at least 30fps) except I'm getting a very laggy frame rate usually around 15-20, or at least thats what it feels like. It feels rather laggy. My specs are...
Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz
512 PC3200 RAM
Leadtek Winfast A6600GT (GeForce 6600GT) 128MB
and if it matters...
Sound Blaster Live! 24-Bit
Are these sufficient to get around 30 FPS at 800x600, Low Quality Everything, No AA/AF?

What you can do ( The easiest way) Is to try a modified driver. The Xtreme drivers I use are very good.
Just register here for free and you can start downloading their drivers.
http://www.tweaksrus.com/
But also download "Driver Cleaner proffessional", and use it after uninstalling the old driver. Read the instructions carefully!
Also lower the AA if you have set it very high and the resoloution.
That card is a good overclocker with one of the best coolers for the 6600gt chip.
So why not download Powerstrip, and give it a slight O.C.?
As long as you stay inside the yellow marker you should be fine.
P.s. You can also download "NV Templogger" at TweakRus. If you wanna monitor the card temp. from the Windows tray.
Posted by: goranpaa
Also, you need another stick of PC 3200, to run the games smoother, That is if you run Windows XP?
Posted by: Omnislash124
Thanks, I'll try that.
EDIT: Yeah I think 1GB RAM is the standard, but i'm kinda on a really tight budget (saving for college) but I think 512 will suffice to bring at least mediocre frame rates.

You're welcome.

O.K. But when you find the money. Try the Corsair RAM. Or maybe G.Skill.
Even the Corsair "Value select" is really good and cheap.

Thanks a lot Goranpaa! That did the trick. Counter Strike Source now runs at a smooth ~45fps during gameplay with 1024x768 resolution with Medium Quality on most things. Though I'm not sure if it was the new drivers or the overclocking of my video card to 565/1003 MHz. Also, to make sure, a peak temperature of ~64 C isn't bad is it? I think it hit there some time during gameplay, wasn't sure, but it was yellow.
EDIT: Speaking of RAM, I've been looking at Kingston and Geil RAM as well as Corsair's ValueSelect sticks....are the Kingston and Geil any good?
Posted by: goranpaa
Great! Did you also notice any difference in image quality? I love Xtreme! After using their "goodies" for a year now. I never use Nvidia orginal drivers. That is a good FPS by the way. And the O.C. also contributed I belive.
64 C is about the same Load temp I have. ( 62 C) So that is o.k. ( I have an extra 120 mm fan 86 CFM, blowing in between the cards).
Both Kingston and Geil are good RAM. The Kingston Value is as good as Corsair value S. And of coarce their "Hyper X" are very nice. But rather exspensive.
P.S. Did you set the overclock sliders facing eachother in Powerstrip? If not? Do it now.
And as said. dont go over the yellow marking.
Posted by: Omnislash124
Um.....Those strips are actually bordering almost red.....Can you check that? It seems pretty stable, but i dunno...
Posted by: goranpaa
Hi!
That is not quite correct. Take the engine clock to 550. And set the mem clock to 1100. That is a good, stable o.c. Do a gaming session, and check the card temp as a safety precausion. I think, you have about the same airflow in your PC case as I have. But best to check the temp anyway.
Also uncheck, " Disable support for driver options". And check, "Disable floating point precision". Othervice the o.c. will have no effect.
So probably the improved FPS whas the driver only anyway. lol
Posted by: Omnislash124
Um.....with the Changes you suggested (551 MHz Core Clock and 1.1GHz Mem Clock) The performance actually dropped back down a notch (frames ranging from 30 - 40, and the occasional 70-90) and a lower temperature as well (somewhere in the vicinity of 56 C). I think it's the Dropped Core Clock from 565MHz to 550MHz.....but I thought the spike in Mem. Clock would counterbalance that.....I dunno, see attachment to see if I did it correctly. Sorry this is taking a while.

Hi again!
If the temps are o.k. And you have a nice run at this setting. It should be okie dokie.
You can also head into BIOS ( This you do by tapping the "Delete key" at first Boot screen. Then use the "Arrow keys" to scroll your way around).
And see if you can find a menue that says "Graphics Aparture size"? And set this to the highest value possible ( probably 256mb). This will help your videocards memory some. Just don't forget to save the setting in BIOS before you leave.
Cheers,
goranpaa

I assume that a Peak of 65 C is healthy for the computer. If that is so, then I am done. Changed the AGP Aperture Size to 256MB and now Counter Strike: Source runs at 30+fps sometimes even at 60fps though only in short bursts, when nothin much is happening, even at intense times, it retains a frame rate above 30fps. Thanks a lot Goranpaa!
EDIT: Unfortunately, I'm running on a Dell Dimension 4600 so I can't install custom fans to the computer. Perhaps Graphics card, but not to the entire computer itself. But if 65 C is healthy for a peak temp (at least after 10 minutes of play), then it should be okay.
EDIT AGAIN: On Second thought, Apparantly gameplay is fine probably for a few minutes, but I just tested the new speeds with 3DMark01 turned on max, 4xAA, 1280x1024, pure D3D Hardware Rendering and the temp alarm went off. After the 2nd test on high detail and during the 3rd test on low detail, the alarm activates with the temperature hitting a whopping 78 C. Probably not a safe temp there. Suggestions?
Posted by: goranpaa
You're welcome.
Hmmm.
65C as peak, is o.k.
And you will see more improvements from the AGP aparture setting, when you get more RAM. This as the videocard borrows a few mb when needed.
No. 78C is'nt good at all. But also have in mind. That all kinds of Benchmarks, press the hardware to the limit, and have very little to do with the day-to- day usage.
The best stability test is to run the most graphically advanced game you have. And game away for a couple of hours. If that works? Then keep the setting. That is if you're not benchmark a lot?
If you do? Then lower the o.c. settings in "10" steps and benchmark in between, watch the temps. Until you find a setting that does'nt trigger the alarm, and still gives you a good performance.
That's the only way.
A small tip for a fan: Get one of this, and mount it near your videocard. This "slot exhaust blower",
will both remove heat from the video card and from the case.
You just mount it in a free slot opening near the videocard.

Um.....Hello again, sorry for reviving a dead topic, but I recently just loaded up Halo on my computer for some play again....and within minutes, the alarm goes off again, with a peak of 78C.
Seeing this, I continue to lower the speeds and it still hits the 75C mark....do I have to restart the Computer after changing clock speeds? Because this alarm is still going off at stock speeds.....
Posted by: goranpaa
Yeah, I think you need to restart. But that card seems to be sensitive to o.c. Strange, as I have o.c:ed both 1 agp Leadtek 6600GT, 1 PCI X Leadtek and I never whent over 64C.
I think you may need some additional case cooling. And maybe the Enermax exhaust blower I told you about.
Download "Motherboard monitor 5 and check the case temp, after gaming for a while.
Posted by: Omnislash124
No dice, Restarted computer, clocks are at ~500/~900 respectively and here's the graph of the temps.....Is the fan the only way to go?
Posted by: goranpaa
No, but the cheapest. And your card is peaking 80C. That is'nt a good temp.
Is ist the noise, that worries you about that fan? It is 28 DbA, so you wont hear it over the other fans, anyway.
Posted by: Omnislash124
No, just the fact that I have to go out and buy a new fan.....And I can't exactly freely go online and buy it considering how I'm a high school student gettin ready for college.....
Posted by: goranpaa
You can find similar at a lokal PC shop. Or if you have a good 80, 90 mm fan lieing around? Remove a couple of the PCI slot covers at the back of the PC case and strap it there, angling it at the videocard ( mounting it at the same side as the videocard fan / GPU ). Then you can choose if you want the fan to suck or blow at the card. The best placement, is to leave a slot opening beween the card and the fan, if possible?
Posted by: Omnislash124
Well i do have an old fan that is still in working condition, though it's not made for an expansion slot position. I'll have to look for at again.....
Posted by: goranpaa
But that is what I meant. You can use an old case fan, 3 or 4 pin connector. And then use a couple of those plastic, self locking straps to fix it to the slot openings. One of my friends, have done this with good results with a Radeon X800GT and a 80mm case fan. The temp, dropped 12C for him. It may not be a beaut of a modification. But who looks at the backside of the case often anyway? lol.
Posted by: Omnislash124
Yeah, sorry for reviving a dead topic again, but more help needed, this time, it's not just Counter Strike Source....It's been spreading into my other games where I have a period of normal gameplay and then looks like it freezes for like 20 seconds, then returns to gameplay. During the Freeze time, graphics don't move and the sound loops....suggestions? This has happened in Counter Strike Source, Call of Duty 2, and Age of Empires III, not sure with anything else yet...

Have you defragged the harddrive. And scanned for spyware and viruses lately? Removed all junkfiles? Shut down all the unnessisary services in Win XP, using SIS Sandra:s "Performance Tune Wizard"?
Checked your RAM with the software "Memtest"?
Posted by: Omnislash124
I haven't defragged, but I'fe removed all junkfiles and used Adaware and AVG to scan. I've concluded that it's probably not a virus problem. I'll try to Defrag next and then Performance Tune Wizard. Also, I'm sure RAM is fine too.
EDIT: I can't find anything on Performance Tune Wizard from SiS Sandra....Is it on their website or is there another place to find it?
Posted by: goranpaa
No, you must download the software, SIS Sandra. The Performance Tune Wizard, is a part of the SIS Sandra software.

OK, now we have a problem, Age of Empires II no longer starts. It loads up to the menu at which point, XP pops up with the "AOEIII has encountered a serious error and needs to close". Call of Duty 2 refuses to load any type of game, crashing when the thing begins to load. Haven't tried CS Source yet though....any suggestions?
Posted by: goranpaa
Oh boy!
The only thing, I can think of is reformatting the HDD and reinstalling Windows. At least for the moment.
Posted by: Omnislash124
Well, if it's any consolation, any other game still works.....including CS Source.....

Everybody loves a revived thread, so here goes. I've found the probelm and neutralized it. Turns out when I moved my old hard drive back into my new computer, a lot of viruses were on there as well, so after cleaning those out, everything's back to normal again. So now, we're back to the problem. I've purchased the Expansion Slot fan from a neighborhood CompUSA from Mad Dog Multimedia, it's a "PC Slot Cooler, Maximum Air Flow 35 CFM - 26dBA" So with that in, sucking air from the card and blowing it out the back. At first, it seems to stray around 41C for no-load temp, which seems normal, until I realize my graphics card is overclocked already to ~570 MHz core and ~1.06 GHz memory, which is nice. Here's the thing, I load up Call of Duty 2 again and it's fine and running, After a bit though, the alarm goes off again, 76C is the temp. Should I just drop that overclock a bit, or is there something i'm missing?
EDIT: I might also want to add what it says for specifications:
Dimensions: 80mm x 25mm
Max Air Flow: 35 CFM
Noise: 26 dBA
Rotational Speed: 2900 +/- 10% RPM
Air Pressure: 3.4 mm - H20
Rated Voltage: 12V
Started Voltage: 7V
Rated Current: 0.15A (Max)
Power Input: 1.85W
Bearing Type: Sleeve Bearing
MTBF: 30,000 Hours
Connectors: 4-Pin
Operational Temp: -10C ~ 70C
If that helps...
Posted by: goranpaa
Well done! Great you solved the prob.
Yes, you need to lower the O.C. somewhat. Lower it in 10 MHz steps and see, when you stop getting alarms. Probably it is the memory that overheats most.
Maybe updating your videocard BIOS also will help some? You should have got a BIOS update / flash tool on the CD that came with your videocard. Do not try to do this any other way!
If you did'nt get the update / flash tool? Check out the videocard manufacturers homesite for it.
Posted by: Omnislash124
You mean the AGP Update right? Ok, that's done, and I've dropped clock speeds back down to stock speeds at 500MHz/900MHz. I start up Call of Duty 2 and it runs fine for about 4 minutes before the alarm goes off again, from looking at the graph, it just steadily increases about to reach a plateau before hitting 76C....
Posted by: goranpaa
Even if the alarm goes off? You dont experiense any problems with the games right? If you look in the temperature monitor in the drivers propertys. You see that the core slowdown is 145 C. This is the maximumum temp your card can handle.
And I just looked around at the net for wich load temps other owners of Leadtek 6600GT:s have?
And those temps differs from 72 to 84 degrees. at least 4 guys out of 13, had 84C as max temp.
So maybe, you should'nt worry too much about 78C?
Posted by: Omnislash124
Yeah, there're not any problems even at 76C, I'm just worried about the temp. But if that seems normal for other guys with Leadtek 6600GTs, I guess I'll go with it. Thanks.
Posted by: goranpaa
Youre welcome.
I remember my AGP Leadtek 6600GT peaked 77 to 80C. But then I had it overclocked pretty much. And besides, Nvidia, states that the GPU threshold value is 127 C and brands like Leadtek and Gigabyte up to 145C.
