I got a AMD sempron 3100+ from compaq, how much could I overclock it and how?

Posted by: uh...ok

If it's a Compaq, you don't.

Agree. Definitive dont!

Dang, why not ? too hard?

Posted by: goranpaa

The Compaq PC:s is'nt good to use for o.c. You will have more trouble than joy from it.
Better, if you get yourself a AMD 64, PCI express stuff, and build yourself a nice rig instead. I can help you pick out the stuff, if you just give me a budget. But you will have to count on about 700 USD.

Of coarce, you can save some bucks, by getting another PCI express socket 754 AMD mobo. And maybe use the RAM you got, if they are DDR RAM? But a new PCI Express video card is a must anyway. Also a new Powersupply I recon.
But that socket 754 PCI Express mobo, wont be very upgradable, CPU vice.

k, thx, ill probably buy 3700+ 64, and then over clock that, how much can i overclock that one if i get it?

Posted by: goranpaa

You can't as long as you are running that Compaq mobo.
And you don't need to overclock a 3700+. It will run circles around your Sempron anyway.
But even the 3200+ would give you a whole lotta better performance push, even, if you dont o.c.

Here you have a link to a good webshop and the Athlons:

EDIT: Have in mind, that you will need a Heatsink and fan, if you buy the 3700+ or the 3400+ from Tiger direct. As they are OEM. And anyway you choose. You will need some thermal paste. Like Arctic Silver Ceramique.

Compaq computers are pretty fragile in the sense that bad stuff happens if you so much as sneeze on them - simply because they're poorly built and made mostly of low-quality components. Besides, most proprietary systems these days prevent you from being able to modify the bus speeds on your motherboard anyway. Even if you did succeed at changing those settings, you'd be voiding your warranty the instant you do so, so if anything goes wrong...

Why are you so intent on buying a new CPU just to overclock it? If you don't really know understand much about computers and overclocking in general, I would really discourage you from trying until you've learned much more detail about the process and the risks involved. Besides, with most systems nowadays, you *don't* need to overclock them because the CPU isn't even the bottleneck anymore.

If you plan on blowing a lot of money, be my guest. But think hard about what you're actually going to do before actually making a purchasing decision.

goranpaa, this is nothing personal, but in almost every other thread, I see you suggesting to people to purchase new hardware when there's absolutely nothing wrong with their current setup. Do you work for one of these companies or something?

Posted by: goranpaa

Nope, Unfortunatly I dont work for newegg for ex. Lol they don't have any shops or offices in my country. And as you said yourself. I "suggest". No one is forced to buy anything if they dont want to. And besides. I do try to keep my suggestions as cheap as possible.
I agree, that Overclocking, is'nt the soloution here. And I also think that dude, need to read up on PC:s and hardware. Knowlege is after all a light burden to carry.
