SBC DSL for a Linux server

SBC Sales and SBC Tech Support in San Diego spent time telling me about the great services they offered and told me their San Diego Office did most of the Level 2 tech support help to set up SBC DSL line with a static IP address in our San Diego area.

They advised me to get the SBC Yahoo DSL Expert Plus Package $99. per month (1.5-6.0/384-608) and their 2 Wire 1701HG (802.11g 2 Wire).

They promptly shipped cables, filters , modem and a CD . They did not have a packing slip, insturctions or a user manual.

I have spent hours with their tech support . Both Level 1 and 2 are abusively polite or slow or speak with accents who can't understand. slow techs - some who I could not understand .

I spent hours getting RJ14 jack filter (they only sent RJ11) , connecting and changing setting on other computers I did not want connected to the DSL line , and then they told me they do not support Linux.

We have cable for our network and it's fast and reliable. We wanted DSL just for a server .

Has anyone set up Linux with SBC DSL line?

The modem and line works with my Windows laptop

I have Fedora Core 3 on the server.

There is no reason why it shouldn't work. I have used both Mandrake and Gentoo on SBC Yahoo DSL. They just say they don't support Linux because they are untrained in its use.

If you want to know for sure, boot up a Knoppix Live CD and try connecting to the net with the web browser. You may be able to configure some of the 2Wire routers settings from a browser by typing in http://homeportal

It is possible you may have to setup the modem from within windows, but once it's setup, it will work in Linux.

Thanks. I am able to connect to the internet but am not able to enable SSH remote server access even with DMZ enabled.

Are there Linux settings I need to do?

Whatever means you use to configure your 2Wire DSL modem should have a place where you can open up the port needed. It may be blocked by default, but if I remember right, you can open any ports you want on the device.

ALERT!!!: SBC does not inform you that your name will be listed on the who is database when you order static IPs for your service. They send the billing name , without informing you to who is and you'll find yourself listed on the world wide web .

Odd. The SBC Yahoo service here uses DHCP.
