class warfare and fanaticism

dunno if this belongs under rants and raves but ill put it here. maybe i will continue to post here maybe not depends on how i feel about it if a topic comes up that isnt tech related or AMD related. i find it a bit ironic that i have been threatened with censorship for my views on AMD and AMD related products. i will grant that i may have gone a bit off the point of the original posting with my peronal views and i was not trying to offend the original poster intentionally. if i did, i apologize for it. (now if only red china had enough juevos rancheros to apologize for holding our people hostage).

k, now that, that part is done ill get to the point of why im writing this letter in its fourth draft. the first one fortunatly was not sent since the email i recieved and replied to did not have a valid return address. the second missive i drafted i accidently closed the browser. and the third i cut and pasted into a txt file and left at the house on my desktop which i shall delete later as it is also full of words i dont think i really care to say. as i have had a bit of time to chill and sit and drink a cherry coke here at work while i plan out the days events and answer emails both personal and work related, ill draft this reply up and post it here since i cannot seem to find the private message function of this website forum. im not one for keeping the dirty laundry under the bed anyway as a lot of folks are aware. i follow the philosphy of airing the bedding out and in a short time the stink will be gone and all will be back to normal, instead of letting it build up by using private missives and letting things grow out of proportion.

u may be wondering "JANNA wtf where are u going with all this??" well i like to ramble on about nothing or unrelated topics i just type and let the words flow out as they will. basically tho my viewpoints on the subject of AMD are not in favour with the management of the forums. i have exerience with AMD k5-k7 series systems now for the last month or so in a large 50 node network which i am responsible for at my new job. granted it is not a gameing network but a business environment where reliablity and dependability are paramount. the ratio of systems are 9 AMD to 41 intel machines and 90% of the problems i get are from the minority of AMD puters which consist of 3 K5 a K6 and 6 K7 the K7 two of which are local built the rest from HP and Compaq. and it is the K7 that i have the most trouble out of the amd lot. the problems i get from the intel side stem from the 4 E-Machines that the company bought before i was hired. with the K7 puters it is the compaq based comps that give the most trouble the two local built puters from small shops give fewer problems. problems range from blue screens to MSoffice not running and locking up to unexplainable hangs. im slowly replacing those machines with others and relagating the AMD puters to people who are not dependant on the comps to perform their jobs. i dont care to be accused of not having experience with AMD systems in a real world environment. building ur own system is no easy undertaking and i will be the first to admit it has taken me 4 years to become proficient enough at system building to the point where i am willing to build comps for people and have them work. AMD take a LOT of experience to build one so it is stable, and it takes a lot of research to pick out the parts and components to make one run stable. ive built 2 K7 so far, both athlon thunderbirds 1.33 266 varients one with raid 0 and one without. both systems give no problems to the people i made them for at their request. but i spent a lot of time researching the components needed and compiled a list of the cheapest quality parts that would work in those systems. would i build one for work and put it in the environment of business?? at this time no. not because i dont think i can build a AMD system that would be reliable enough but because home built comps dont have a place in a business regardless of whether it is AMD or Intel. mainly for liability reasons if it should break or cause damage to the business if the HD go out at the exact wrong time. As far as building ur own computer is concerned regardless of whether ur a member of the AMD Religion or the Intel Religion i strongly urge people not to fiddle around with stuff like that unless they have and are willing to spend the money time effort and headaches to learn how to build a comp from the ground up. my recomendation to people is to buy Dell and get the extended warranty. i have experienced all manner of problems in comps from ogl screen savers on servers to people using the recycle bin for file storage to data recovery from crashed HD with the FAT being destroyed. i do take offense when i am accused of not having experience in certain areas. i will be the first to admit if i dont know when asked a question but i will also go out and find the answer so next time i will know.

i think that when people start focusing on CPU and Chipsets and MB and certain companies, be it linux unix amd intel or microsoft both pro and anti in each case, and turning them into religous icons is where true danger lies. my views right now on the current state of affairs may appear to some to be rather harsh but i find that there is a ton of mis-information out there people are spending thousands of dollars and sheckles on systems because they read about how wonderful this new uber-clocking chipset is on some fan-boy (ala anandtech)overclocking website and they dont really dig up the dirt on the systems themselves. they dont ask others about their experiences with such things and the poor schmucks plunk down a couple grand on a comp and components that at best should still be in alpha testing in a quality control lab. (im not "dissing" amd or intel they both fall into this category) what i do find troubling is the recomendations people make to others based on a viewpoint of hardware that borders on fanaticism or just plain misinformation.

enough of that.

my last point is that buying a product without looking into all costs and problems is hard thing to do and not everyone can or does have the time and they must rely on others who have gone the journey to find the info. when i tell folks to go intel i do it not because i think AMD is bad or evil but because there are maybe a handful, if that, of people that rummage these forums regularly, capable of acquring and assembling the parts neccessary to build a quality system where the average non-techgeek would be better served by buying a comp off the shelf or assembling a more forgiving intel based machine. i know i myself tend to go overboard and get carried away with my personal likes and dislikes but i truly base my opinions on the current state of the tech world. i value reliabilty, longevity, and ease of use and maintanance in all things.

as some folks are aware i have a long history of use of AMD products and have been on both sides of the fence. if amd ever catches up to the intel products for reliabilty, compatability, performance, and ease of use in all those areas then i will recomend that product. but as it is right now i will continue to express my opinions and ideas. if the powers that be feel it neccessary to censor me then so be it. its taken me all day to write this in the times between meetings and problem solving and im probably still not saying all i should or want to say. but here it is and if the CPU fits start steppin'

Wow Janna, That was a longer read but was very true in what you stated, in my opinions and knowledge. But I am sure that it will hit the Rants forum soon. Still good "Speech"?. Anyways, I understand clearly what you meant and have seen what you mean where AMD's become more of a hassle than an intel system of the same stages.
