Jesus doesn't want me to play Half Life 2

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I downloaded Half Life 2 off of steam to play, and have no upgraded videocard right now, its just the onboard HP whatever. But Half Life 2 runs, for the first 2 levels then I get to the Route Kanal level and it keeps crashing during autosaves and quicksaves. I get the blue screen but I can't get the stop error because it goes away too fast. Any reccomendations? or something...

What are your specs?

Posted by: GADBabaganoosh

Umm...

AMD Sempron 1.8 Ghz

512 MB RAM

Cheap ass integrated motherboard videocard. (I'm upgrading this week)

It freezes during saves. like when it auto saves and quicksaves and stuff.

Then your prob. is that integrated card, not coping with Half life. Good that you are on the way getting a new videocard. Just make sure it is a 128 or 256 mb of memory. Radeon 9800 ( 70 bucks) or 9800Pro if you can shell out 140 bucks? Is a good choise. I would'nt go for the new Radeon X series or Geforce 6 series if I where you, considering the rest of your hardware.

And avoid Geforce MX cards!

Is the Radeon 9800 a PCI card?

I was thinking of getting a Radeon 9250 but If I can get a 9800 and its better, then I will.

Posted by: goranpaa

No, it's AGP. But the best PCI videocard you can get is Geforce FX 5500. 128 mb.
And this is the very best one:

PNY VCGFX55PPB Geforce FX5500 128MB 128-bit DDR PCI Video Card - Retail $89.00

Why not the ATI 9250?

Posted by: goranpaa

Of coarce you can run the 9250, But the FX 5500 is a faster card, that will handle tuffer games better.
And Half Life, is'nt the easiest game for a videocard to handle.

I agree with goranpaa, Half Life 2 requires a decent card to run nicely. I think the geforce is your best bet.

Posted by: GADBabaganoosh

Maybe I'll pick it up then. What about RAM? Wheres some cheap good ram?

Posted by: goranpaa

What RAM do you have and speed? How many megabyte do you got now?

Posted by: goranpaa

If you dont know? Download Everest Home.

I checked in the BIOS and it says DDR 400 3200 PC or something like that 512 MB.

Posted by: goranpaa

O.k. Then this is a good decently priced RAM stick:

CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) System Memory - Retail $37.25

Also remember to rid yourself of static electrisity, before you touch any hardware. Grab a water tap or kitchen sink. Even a small amount of static electrisity, can kill hardware.

Thanks for all the info. Glad I asked, everyone seems knowledgeable about this.

Posted by: goranpaa

You're welcome.

Posted by: GADBabaganoosh

Well, I'll tell you how it goes when I get my videocard today.

Posted by: GADBabaganoosh

I installed it and everything, but I'm trying to figure out how to completely shut off the integrated graphics in the BIOS but I don't know which one it is. What is it commonly?

Posted by: goranpaa

Look under "integrated peripherals". But dont forget to save the setting in BIOS before you leave.
If you dont find it? Then you could have a BIOS, that automatically let your new videocard overrule the integrated one.

But also uninstall the driver for the integrated chip in Windows device mananger.

Posted by: goranpaa

Also dont forget to make the additional settings for your new card in the drivers propertys.

1. Rightclick on your windows desk, and choose propertys.
2. Choose "Settings". And set the resoloution to 768 x 1024.
3. Click "advanced"and then "Monitor". Set the update frequensy to 75 Hz.This will lover the flickering and spare your eyes.

4. Click the tab with the videocards name on, and "colour correction". Here you can set sharpness, gamma and colour to your liking.

This settings you have to redo, every time you update the driver.

Visit Nvidia home, for driver updates for you FX card. Forceware drivers, are generic, and suits all Geforce video cards.

Whats the advantage to setting the refresh rate at 75 hz? I have always had mine on 60 lol. Is it better to have it on 75?

Posted by: goranpaa

Yepp, 60Hz will wear out your eyes in the long run. The higher setting the better. But 75 Hz is a setting any monitor can handle.

Posted by: GADBabaganoosh

hahahah, I was actually going to ask about that, but you've already answered my question!
