my friend inherited a computer which is invested with everything under the sun. seems to have viruses and spyware galore. lots of porno etc. has win xp as operating system. had dsl installed but can't really do anything with pop ups running the show etc. how can the computer be reformatted [completely wiped clean]with a fresh start when he doesn't have any xp discs? also will a reformat mess up the dsl installation settings[email etc.]?

With a reformat you lose aboslutely everything that's on that partition. Buy an XP disc, it's definitely worth the investment. Just boot the computer with the disc in the drive and it'll take you through the rest. I'm sure someone else on here has a nifty guide they could post.

Have you tried going back to a restore point or at least try some before I would reformat the whole thing. Just an Idea!

I always format a computer that I get from someone else. Mostly out of respect so that if there's anything sensitive on there it's gone. But trying a system restore point might help a bit. Also use a virus scanner and spyware scanner to get rid of any bugs. I still stick by getting an XP disc.
