Hard drive space disappearing

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello, I'm running Windows XP Pro SP1.

My 15 gig C drive is constantly losing 100-400 megs per startup. I've run anti-spyware programs, anti-virus programs, defrag programs, check disk. All have come up with no results/good results.

I've deleted my temporary files, cleared my cache, and I do not have system restore on nor do I have a page file (1.5 gigs of ram is a good thing ^^)

I was wondering if there's anything I've overlooked? I haven't added any new files to my C drive recently, and the loss of space worries me.

A good way to tell is to check the folder sizes of Documents and Settings, Program Files, and Windows, and then see if you can get to a more specific folder thats causing the increase in hard drive use.
Also, is the hard drive space decreasing while you're using it or after you startup your computer and log in only?

It's happening while I use it. In the last 30 minutes I've lost 0.01 gigs.

Using task manager, try to see what programs are using processor time, even just a little will make way for taking up space. Or see if a program starts using clock cycles at the same time your Hard Drive Activity LED goes off.

My Application Data folder in my 'All Users' directory is just over 5 gigs. Is that normal?

Mine is 12 MB, so probably not.

Well, how do I fix the problem? ^^;;

Posted by: Outlaw

You could go into that folder and see where all the big files are. The exact location will probably give away the cause of the problem, since those folders are named after the programs that use them.

None of the visible folders are more than 50 megabytes. I tried viewing all the hidden ones, but my system told me that it was going to take 3minutes and didn't change for about an hour.

How exactly are you trying to view these folders? I've never seen an estimated time doing something like this.

If you didn't already do it like this: Right-click each folder and select properties to check their size.

I found the culprit. It's AVG that's taking up so much space. Are .AVG files important to AVG?

Posted by: Outlaw

Just did a quick Google search and it seems that more people have this problem. Deleting those files didn't cause any problems for them, however, they might come back. If they do come back, I'd try reinstalling AVG (preferably the latest version), that might fix it.

Thanks I just did the same thing and was going to ask your opinion. I'll delete them, and come back tomorrow to tell you if deleting them caused any problems. That way there'll be an answer if this comes up again

Deleting the .avg files has not hindered AVG's performance in any way.
