A new shade of .pif virus?

I've got a friend who contracted a virus from God knows where, and now it's making her AIM account spam "AOL IS CLOSING: ___________" and a link to the same .pif file. I've read a few things on a .pif virus and how to get rid of it, and each example I've found sounds different according to symptoms and the methods of deletion are all different. Just wondering if anyone could relate to any prior experiences with such a bug, and if the reccomended solution of booting into DOS and running SCANPM /ADL /CLEAN /ALL would work.

Well, if it's an XP machine, there's no "DOS" to boot to.
The best bet would be to scan for viruses and such. I recommend Avast. There are quite a few free online scans that can be done, McAfee has one, BitDefender, Trend Micro's House Call, etc. Also scan with Spybot and Ad-Aware. After all that, if there are still problems, post a HijackThis log.
