Video files play magnified and can't see whole screen!

I've always been able to play video files (avi) and DVDs on my PC, but I have just swapped my old CRT monitor for a TFT and am suddenly having problems. The video plays, but I can only see the bottom right hand corner of the film because it looks as if it's magnified so large that it won't fit on the screen. This happens in RealPlayer, Windows Media Player and InterVideo DVD Player, so it's not software specific.

I've tried different screen resolutions, been through every setting I can fine, have downloaded the latest DivX, and even phoned the monitor tech support but they said 100% that it's not a monitor problem. They said it must be a setting and that it's co-incidental that it's only happening on my new monitor. Unfortunately I don't have my old CRT any more to test it with! Please - I'm desperate for help! I've got season 2 Battlestar Galactica downloaded and I can't watch it!! Thanking you in advance...
