Computer start up

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have been wondering for some time now as to why when I turn my computer on it takes awhile for it to run POST, and get to the windows loading screen. It seems like it lags between those times. Not sure why. My computer has sufficent cooling, there are like 4 fans on the inside.

ASUS A8N-SLI
2 gigs of ram
6400+ AMD 64
IDE harddrive (160gig, dont know RPMs)
Sound Blaster sound card
GT 7800 Nvida Graphics

If anyone could please help me out as to why this does this it would be much apperciated.

do you have quick boot enabled?

Posted by: LostYouth

I do not know if I have quick boot enabled or not. This is my first custom build. Is there an area that I might be able to find the quick boot option? Would that be in the BIOS when I start it up? Or some place else?

yes, that should be in the BIOS

Yes quick boot is enabled and I am still having slow boot up speeds. The same amount of time it did take, because it was enabled from the get go. Anyone have any other ideas?

youll have to determine where its slow

Posted by: LostYouth

It lags after the boot image comes up. Once there is sits for a bit, after the boot image goes away it seems like I can see some words that look like POST. Not to sure what is going on at this time. It just lags there. My computer total because of that lag can take about 5 minutes to boot. No idea what is happening. It runs fine after it starts up.

Do you have any boot up virus scanners? I used to have one that would scan my entire computer before Windows even loaded.

Posted by: LostYouth

No I do not have any unless Norton is set to do that by default or my mobo has one set to do that.

Okay, well, I would check your System files, like Boot.ini and such. I'm not sure which it would be specifically located in, but I'm throwin' that out there for others who would know, to point it out. Start->Run->"sysedit" is what I usually check to make sure that there hasn't been any tampering. Also, Start->Run->"msconfig" is another place I check. But wait for someone who knows specifically which you'd want to check to tell you.

so this is prior to windows even starting to load? check your bios for anything odd, like having something in the boot order that isnt there.

if that's not tha problem check out what is set to boot up with windows. Find tha startup folder in windows exploiter, ha little joke, seriously, windows explorer, ya might have programs starting up that you don't even use much.

Posted by: LostYouth

ok so look for something that is enabled on the mobo bios that I am not using, basicly it what you saying?
Also my lag time isn't after windows boots up it is when the BIOS is running. I really dont understand what is going on.

there is something in the bios or hardware causing a problem, we really cant guess what it is though.
