No Windows XP SP3 until 2nd half of 2007

Those of you waiting for a SP3 for XP may be in for a long wait..

Microsoft has gone public with a tentative date for its third service pack for Windows XP. And that date — the latter half of 2007 — is considerably later than many company watchers were expecting.

Microsoft has published the due-date for Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) on its Windows Lifecycle Web site. While Microsoft characterized the date as "preliminary," it is still as much as a year later than a number of customers, partners and industry analysts had been anticipating.

Microsoft officials attributed some of the delays in Longhorn/Windows Vista to SP2. Officials claimed the company's decision to reassign developers working on Vista to finishing and testing SP2 had a negative impact on Vista's schedule.

t is unclear if Microsoft is pushing back SP3's delivery date in order to avoid a similar negative impact on Vista's schedule. It's also unclear whether Microsoft may be holding back SP3 in order to help stimulate upgrade demand for Vista.

Fixed (Since it's front page news)

Too bad about the service pack. I like having the latest one slipstreamed into my OS CD. Saves me alot of time whenever I decide to reinstall.

Oops.

Anyway, I'm going to milk Windows 2000 for all it's worth until Vista comes out. From what I have read, Vista sound like it might be worth the upgrade provided it has the trimmed down game mode that supposedly will come with it. That and 64-bit support that's better than XP 64-bit edition.

I am impressed that MS is putting priority in supporting its existing products and not in the up and coming vista.

huh “existing products” ? i thought he just said no more service pack for XP til 2007 ?

plus havnt they also stopped windows 2000 support as well ?

looks like theyve completely forgoten existing products n theyre focusing all their attention on vista

I clicked on the here link to read the full XP SP3 article and nothing happened. Is the link still working or is there a problem at my end?

Thanks,

It still works for me.

Thanks Outlaw,

It doesn't work for me and yet right underneath it there is another link that says 7, now probably 8 replies. When I clicked on that it worked.

Can anyone explain why that might be?

Thanks,

So they delayed the release. It's really no big deal. Personally, I think XP has too many bugs in it already and no additional service pack could fix it without being called a new version of Windows. In my case, I'll feel it important to test out the service pack in order to be able to assist customers having problems with it but thats pretty much the only reason I'll have XP on my computer. I'd rather have Vista around and their choice to put Vista before SP3 is excellent.
What should be the real topic of interest here is what the hell Microsoft is going to do when Windows gets its ass handed to it by MacOS when its released for x86 PCs.
Btw, the link works for me.
