My xp2600 thinks its a XP2000

Probably the same old story you've all heard a billion times but I am tearing out what little hair I have left to suss out why my new (Used) xp2600 Barton core thinks its a XP2000. Yeah, I know I'm anthropomorphising, but I need some kind technical sort of person to help out in persuading this 2600 find its real ident.

Detials:

GA-7VA Mobo currently with 512 mb set to FSB of 333Mhz.
No overclocking (that I'm aware of).
I got the latest BIOS from Gigabyte only a few days ago.
Oh, and I'm running XP Pro - no I don't know why!

Any hints, guys

Thanks for you attention - 'preciate it.

what speed is it currently reading?

For a 2600 Barton;
AXDA2600DKV4C set 15x133mhz=2000
AXDA2600DKV4D set 11.5x166mhz=1917 (this is your current bus speed)

barton2600 does not run at 2600mhz

different chips run with different speeds, it is up to the user to change the bios so that the motherboard runs the chip at its appropriate speed. a barton 2500 is identical to a 3200, just the 3200 has less flaws in it which allows it to be ran at a faster speed without getting too hot.

Hi there, sorry for the delay, work DOES get in the way a bit!

I got a raft of downloads from AMD - one of which is a CPU counter that tells me the processor is running at 1600 - not the 1915+/- I'm lead to expect.

Also the BIOS doesn't seem to have a multiplier (or I don't know what it is supposed to look like - I know, slow-witted by nature. . . . .) - and the BIOS is the latest downloaded this a.m.

Thanks for your advice, I'm very grateful.

Kind Regards,

P.S. "lurking in the woods"? Which woods?

If I recall correctly, it's actually a jumper setting yer looking for. It's physically on the motherboard.

I'll check it out with Gigabyte - is there anywhere that makes sense of these issues, present company excepted?

I looked all over AMD's site but they seem to have forgotten they made the processor. Hmmm! Perhaps too much attention on the go-faster h/w.

I had a simliar problem with my xp2800+ ran at 1.2Ghz instead of 1.8, it's probably tha clock switch on tha mobo or like said above...a jumper setting

Thanks for all your suggestions. I sussed it! I got the wrong manual for the mobo. Mine's a GA-7VA-C and this shows that the FSB Dipswitch is a twin switch and the manual shows the position of the dipswitches for the FSB of 166Mhz. I thought I could do it through the BIOS but this was only for the RAM speed. I now have a CPU speed of 1925+/- and relative to the xp2000 its setting a smart pace.

Thanks again for all your help everyone. Pat yourselves on the back.

Cheers!
