k everyone i could use some help

i wanna replace my pc mainboard witout changin any other periphrals

so thats same cpu same graphix card n so on

old chipset is nforce2 new one is nforce4

so i tried doing so WITHOUT UNINSTALING n reinstaling windows

this is what i tried ( in order )

* uninstall all peripheral drivers ( so thats video card , sound card , modem ... )

* uninstall mainboard drivers ( nvidia nforce drivers )

* reboot

and it dont work !

windows dont even startup cuz i get this darn blue screen evry time

tried unpluging unecessary drives ( only kept primary IDE hard drive where windows installed )

tried bootin in safe mode

nothing works

had to switch back to my ole board and reinstal all my mainboard n device drivers again

so thats my question actually : can i switch mainboards without havin to reinstall windows and my apps all the way again ?

if so how ?

What version of Windows are you using?
If it is XP, you probably won't be able to change your mobo without a full re-install & you would have to contact Microsoft to say what you have done, because you would probably find that XP won't activate again with another mobo. You can change mostly everything else with XP, but if you change the mobo it gets upset.

simply reinstall windows.

that'll fix all the problems, and if the 120 days have passed once you have installed XP, then you wont need to worry about contacting Micro$soft about the activation thing.

actualy ive got windows 2000

It doesn't matter much which version of Windows you have. Changing your motherboard means you'll have to reinstall.

how come uninstaling drivers + chipset drivers aint enough ?

whats it that screws up windows startup ?

Contact uncle Bill gates hehehehhee.

Posted by: kestrel1

Uncle Bill has alot to answer for.
Sometimes you can get away with doing what you have done, but it does look like a re-install is required.
You could just try a repair install to start off with.

nope repair install is no good i still get bsod just before windows suppose to startup

Posted by: Johnny G

He needs a new copy of the os due to him changing motherboards unless you have a cracked copy of windows then thats a different story.

nope im using the original windows cd ( my dads actualy )

u mean i gotta do full reinstalation of windows plus all my apps all over again ? :amd:

Posted by: Outlaw

Yeah, seems like that's the only way you'll get it to work. That's pretty much the standard procedure whenever you change the motherboard, as indicated before.

You could give Driver Cleaner a shot, but I recommend reinstalling Windows like the others.

nope tried it . uninstaled all device n chipset driver then ran driveclean n removed everything nvidia n creative related ( thats for mainboard vid card and snd card )
still got bsod

then tried same as above but this time removed everythin i mean EVERYTHIN ( ticked every option in driveclean : nvidia creative ati ali via ... useless in theroy but jus to be sure )
still got the ****in bsod

thanx for the help tho

Looks like a total re-install then mate.

I know with XP a repair install works fine for this kind of thing as it rebuilds the HAL without losing any data, I can confirm this as I've done it multiple times before but I can't say whether it's possible with 2000. I did the same thing with a Windows 98 machine and somehow it managed to accept the changes from a Slot A PIII 500 to a Socket 754 Sempron 2600 setup without even requiring a re-install which completely stunned me.

apparantly windows xp repair is diffrent from that in windows 2000

every time i get the same dang bsod with msg “inaccesible boot device” or somethin

first i thought it had somethin to do with the ide controler drivers cuz it said “boot device” but then uninstallin chipset drivers also removes ide drivers n replaces them with standard ms drivers so it should work right ? well no it dont : same bsod same msg everytime

so repair install is also useless , still same bsod so i guess windows 2000 repair install dont reset the hardware abstract layer or whatever

aint there a way to uninstall hal manualy ?

Posted by: chainlink

I don't believe there is as the HAL underpins the OS. When you boot from the Windows 2000 CD what options does it give you, does it realise that you already have an OS installed? If you're booting from the CD and it's giving you device errors then it's more likely a hardware issue as it will assume there's no OS installed until it inspects the HD.

nope bootin from cd works ok

i only get the bsod ( and “no boot device” crap ) when i boot from hard drive after changin mainboard

and repair install from cd dont change anything

I wouldn't spend anymore time on this if I was you. Can you afford to loose the data that is on the drive? If not can you get hold of a utility called NTFS-DOS. Presuming your drive is NTFS & not FAT32.
This useful prog will allow you to save your data from NTFS hard drives. You will need the pro version though. I think I have seen a similar program that is free, but I can't think what it is at present.
Anyway, re-install. I think it is your only option.

Just had a look on the web. You could try Active NTFS Reader:
http://www.ntfs.com/products.htm
A CD ISO or floppy image is available & is free.
