I want to hook my Inspiron 1150 Notebook up to my television to use it as a dvd player. Is this possible, and if so, could you tell me how?

It is possible...possibly. Check to see if your laptop has a S-Video connection on it somewhere. It looks like this: it is circular, and the top-half of the circle has holes for wires aournd the top, they will look like a U (either right-side up for upside-down depending on how you look at it), at the bottom of the circle is a rectangle hole for a connector also. It is about 1cm wide. If the laptop does have this, check the back of the TV for the same connection. If it does you can use the special cable to hook them together and this will give video to your TV, but the drawback is that it only does video, so you would still have sound from your laptop. There probably is a way to get sound to the tv but i am not sure how

To get sound, I would say the best way would be to use external speakers connected to the laptops audio out socket.
You may not need an s-video socket on the TV. I think I have seen s-video to AV plug. This would only be the yellow video though, as s-video only delivers video as far as I know & as pointed out by Twiztidjugallo
