Sudden Drop in FPS While Playing World of Warcraft (Cooling Related)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: INeedHelp

Recently, while playing World of Warcraft, the FPS would drop down to 1 - 3 FPS for about 60 seconds. This happens at a randomn interval. I have located the source of problem to be overheating. The measure I have taken to solve this problem is getting the "Chillmat" (http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=PA248U), opening my room windows to bring down the room temperature, and elevate the bottom of my laptop. However this does not seem to solve the problem. Anybody else have suggestions on an adaquet cooling solution? Thanks.

System Spec:
Dell Inspiron 600m
Pendium M 1.3GHz, 1024Kb Lvl 2 Cache
ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 64MB 128-Bit running on the lastest driver from ATI
512MB RAM @ 266MHz

EDIT: All in-game graphic settings are on their lowest setting.

Get this fan:

Or any 90mm fan, that have a cfm, above 35.

Then mount it on a spare PCI slot plate, from your case.

You will have to modify the plate with a plier somewhat. And then strap the fan to the plate, using a couple of self locking plastic straps.

Mount this fan blowing on the card and for best results, leave a Slot between fan and card.

Also try to move all cables, so they wont interfere with the airflow inside the case. And also adding a couple of good case fans may help.

He has a dell laptop, first of all, I have never heard of anyone putting a standard case fan in a laptop, secondly, if he tears up his pc, his warrenty is out the window.
If the chillmat didnt help, and this problem just started up, I am inclined to think that it is not an overheating issue. Is the problem just with WoW, or does it happen to other games as well.

Sorry, I did'nt see it whas a laptop.

Then this laptop cooler is probably the best way:

That one would perform a little better than the targus chillmat you have, but I still am not convinced it would fix your problem.

I am also having the same exact problem usually with anything that has to do with running too much stuff graphically such as video or a lot of programs running. It happens mostly in games obviously such as World of Warcraft and Counter-Strike Source.

I have an AlienWare laptop (basically a mobile desktop cuz it is a beast of a machine) with the following specs:
P4 3.6 gHz w/ HT
1GB DDR Ram
256 MB DDR2 GeForce 6800 Go on PCI express
couple of HDs, yada yada...that is the important stuff.

So anyways, it should def be running these things flawlessly and yet..
When it happens, I will get a graphic and sound 'hiccup' and the frame rates plummet. It sounds like the cooling fan shuts almost completely down and will remain this way until I stop all the video stuff. I haven't tried getting a laptop cooling tray thing yet, but I am convinced that it is something that can be fixed as it did not always do this. I haven't resorted to formatting because I am convinced it is not a software issue.

SO...if anyone has any helpful suggestions I am def willing to listen.

Appreciate your time and help.

anyone got any clues?

Why don't you ask Alienware for advice on the problem? Maybe others are getting the same prbolem with the same laptop?

Alienware tech support = a bunch of Indians who know nothing

no offense to those from India, but I can't understand what you say over the phone.. >.>

I had a similar problem playing WOW on my Laptop. I got the BYtech cooling-desk-thing that Goranpaa suggested. I also added an aditional 1Gig of RAM. All of my overheating and slowness problems vanished into the night. I highly suggest both of these. depending on the type of RAM your laptop uses, you can usually get a great deal off NewEgg.com. Id look into these two things.

Good Luck!

Probably the biggest problem is that your playing on a laptop...
generally the video cards are "shared memeory" which means your 64mb video card is eating up some of your 512 mb of ram.... really your only using 448 mb of ram.

Minimum requirement is 512 mb of ram, there fore your best bet is to buy atleast 1 gb of ram. A chillmat will help lower your system temp (i use one), which will help performance.

also, make sure yourt using the minimum video settings.

as for the alienware laptop, beats me, that thing should run wow no problem.
