Upgrading System! Advice please thankyou!

I currently have

Athlon XP 2800+ @ 2.31Ghz
1.5GB DDR400
ATI RADEON 9600XT 128mb
ASUS A7N8X-E DELUXE
ENERMAX 300watts PSU ( Probably still good if I upgrade seeing its quality)

Alright so I want to do some more heavy gaming, and I feel for an upgrade only I don't want to invest 'too much'

I looked for an

Athlon 3000+ in SOCKET 754 but then I realise that AGP isn't something to invest into and that 754 is getting old so I look into 939 but I'm not real sure which CPU is worth it

can you guys recommend me something keeping in mind that an XP 2800 was enough for me so any kit that is a tiny bit better in 939 would be fine for me ! Thx

It really depends on your budget.....Here's a good mobo using 2 PCI-Express if you ever decide to use SLI, Good ratings on newegg.....

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16813136159

DFI LanParty UT nF4-D Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $129.00

And for a processor, really your choice, but I'd recommend a 3800+ or so....but that really depends on your budget.....

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Venice 1GHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail $282.00

Just use that as a price point. Raise or lower depending on your budget.

I don't think you've quite seized my message I just want to 'slightly upgrade' I found this

Athlon 3000+ 754
ASUS K8N4-E
NOW I NEED A VIDEO CARD THAT IS BETTER THAN 9600 XT 128MB on PCI-E but that isn't expensive!

i would skip upgrading the board and cpu, and just get a better video card and power supply. upgrading from a 2800 is rather pointless at this point, unless you go to a 64 bit chip.

Oh....sorry about that.

As far as Video cards go....

XFX PVT43GNDF3 Geforce 6600GT 128MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail $119.00

Not a bad choice at 500MHz Core and 1000MHz Memory with 8 Pixel Pipelines and support of Shader Model 3.0

If you wanna get an s. 754 PCI Express? Then Epox have this SLI mobo for you.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16813123257

I have build my second rig based on that mobo, and a 3000+ Newcastle.

+ a couple of 6600GT:s. And It's a very nice mobo. I clocked the Newcastle easily to 2.4 GHz, with the stock cooler. Haveing nice temps. The Newcastle screams!

A friend of mine bought the same mobo and a Clawhammer 3000+. Also very happy with the mobo and stuff.

As for socket 939?

But as Redwench says. The best way would be to get a nice videocard like 6600GT / 6800GS AGP and then a 500W PSU.

And then, when you have the money. Get a Socket 939 rig.

You certainly don't need a 500watt psu to run a 6800GS, anything above 400watts is plenty as long as its a solid brand.

Posted by: goranpaa

Correct, but as the price difference is relativelly small between a 400W and a 500W, and thinking about future upgrades. Then a 500W is a good choise.

Posted by: armystud0911

My bad, I thought he already had a 400W.

Alright so that EPOX board you recommended me IS somewhat interesting but then I got a frown when I realised it only had 2 ram slots ( I currently have 3 x 512)

I did concider getting a good AGP card but the question is not 'WHEN' I'll have the money the question is I don't want to put more money than what is necessary to just RUN the games decently.

Since my 2800 XP with RADEON9600 XT runs all my games pretty decently, I don't feel the need to get anything stronger I just feel the need to get PCI EX so I have more choice in videocards and getting PCI EX forces me to change MOBO, CPU AND VIDEO CARD but I don't need the worlds greatest kit to have it included..

Anything slightly EQUAL or better in 754 to my 2800+ is fine with me
Any motherboard giving me the same options if not more than my ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe also suits my needs and any PCI EX card that outruns my ATI RADEON 9600 XT for the least possible is also fine with me,

Because when you look at 939, the lowest CPU is very expensive, but the 754 3000+ is a very nice purchase since its about the same price as the 2800.

So basically

New CPU better or similar to my 2800 (probably better) that falls under 64bit so that I can use future applications
New Motherboard
Conserving 3 slots of 3 x 512mb DDR400
Getting a PCI EX so I don't have to be stuck with an AGP card!

Or if you guys think its worth it I'M open to your opinions because basically if my CPU motherboard and RAM currently 'suits me' do you guys think that getting an AGP card and selling my old one is worth it?

This mobo then:

DFI nF4X Infinity Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce4-4X ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $76.00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16813136162

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Newcastle 800MHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 754 Processor - Retail $124.00

if youre not having problems with your current system, its quite frankly a waste of money to upgrade. in all seriousness, just put the money aside so that when you need to upgrade, you can buy stuff that looks to be gold at that time. if you buy something now that works with your ram and card, when you go to upgrade it, i think youll find upgrading to be difficult because of changing standards. your current rig, aside from possibly the graphics card, should be fine for a good 2 years.

if you have money to burn, a good pcie board, ddr2 ram, 64 bit chip, uber graphics card, and 500W+ power supply would be the way to go for future upgradability.
