cpu speed and memory reading wrong

what would cause a cpu speed to read wrong and the memory to dispay in correctly. a family member purchased a used ho a810n computer that has an amd 64 3200+ and 512 mb of ram installed. however under the system info menu it reads as 1.8 ghz and 385 mb of ram.

i checked the ram ( opened the case) and it says 512. and the processer should run at 2.4 ghz. everest tells me the cpu is set at 200 mhz and 9x multiplier but that processor is supposed to run at 12x, but there are no jumper settings or options in the hp bios to change that. so what could cause this?

Have you tried setting the FSB to 233mhz?

there are no jumpers to change and hp has cripled the bios to allow only basic changes.

it turns out though that there is a program provided by hp that automatically adjusts the multiplier to suit the needs of the machine. when demand is low it is at 9x and when running more demanding programs it bumps it up to 12x as needed.

i dont think that explains why the original 512mb memory stick only reads 385mb.

it probably doesnt. check what the bios tells you is there, the OS can be off depending on if its shared memory or not.

I think your right Red, it might be shared. The mobo has onbord sound and video so maybe the onboard video is getting its 125mb from the the system memory? The bios tells me 512mb of pc2300, and everest tells me the same in the memory timings category but only 387mb under system summary.

I have only worked with p-3 and k-6 systems up to this point so shared memory is somthing i have never come accross.

if it has onboard video, thats where it is.

Looks like the video is taking 128mb of your system ram as suggested. Is there any way that you can install a graphics card on the mobo & disable the on-board graphics? This would increase the memory available or you could always install more RAM.
