I'm sick of asking people what is wrong and not getting an answer!

ARG! I have been asking all around for help with this and no one even bothers to say they don't know!
I play Diablo II like it's my job. I got the CD from my stepbrother, who had no problems with it. After a few weeks of playing it, I noticed it would do this funny thing every so often. I put the disk in and the start screen with the Amazon pops up like normal. I click on play, the disk spins like it's going to do something, and then my computer freezes. It used to only happen sometimes, but in the past few weeks it happens about 70% of the time! Does anyone have enen the slightest clue what could be wrong?
I have used every technical support thing on Blizzard's site. I even sent them an Email with all my information asking them to help and they still havn't replied. I also posted on their forum... nothing!

Please post your system specs.
Have you tried reinstalling Diablo 2?
After installing, try putting the d2music.mpq file on the CD and paste it into your Diablo 2 folder.

I'll post my system specs tomorrow when I get home. I don't have time to do it right now.
Thank you for replying! You're the first person who has tried to help me.

Your whole system is freezing? Or diablo 2 is freezing?
I have a similar problem, but I have learned to live with it. When I click an icon for the game to start, the disc will spin, but the game does not load. The comp doesnt freeze or anything. Then about 30 seconds later, all of a sudden, the game loads. I think its windows ME that is the cause of it, because on my Pentium III 700mhz that runs Win98se i have no problems. If your comp is completely freezing, then there is a problem. But if it just doesnt load, then just sit back until it does. I wish blizzard would fix some of the common problems that people have. Oh well.
BTW: I havent played LOD on bnet since November 8th because of how crappy its gotten. I refuse to loose my items to punk ass hackers.

The whole computer freezes. It sucks I hate it! I have Windows ME. Could it be possible that the disc is damaged? It has just been getting worse. I have tried to play it for the past few days with no success. And the weird thing is, it doesn't freeze when I try to play, only after I hit the play button on the screen with the Amazon in the Tomb. What is the best thing I can do when my computer freezes? I usual hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete, I don't know what else I could do. Sometimes that doesn't work either and the computer just sits there.
I havn't had much problems with hackers. The only problems I run into, more like ran into when I was new to Battle.net, was when I would trust people too much and they would rip me off. Needless to say I am much less trusting now.
If anyone wantes to meetup with me on Battle.net my account name is IdiraZ. Try whispering me sometime when I get the game working again.

Oh you are playing Classic D2. Have you installed anything lately, like a virus scanner?
Posted by: Indira
Well, I'm sure I have installed a few things since the problem first started and was only a little bug. I can't think of anything I installed recently though.
Posted by: Canis Lupus
Hmmm, I dunno ... it may be related to either your video card or your CD-ROM drive ...
Have you tried uninstalling D2, running a full scandisk/defrag on your system, and then reinstalling it?
You also said the freeze-ups happen after the CD seems to spin down ... check this link:
http://www.blizzard.com/support/ind...ution&BugID=320
And see if that helps a little ... we will be awaiting your computer specs so we can help you better

I havn't tried uninstalling or reinstalling or anything like that. Would I lose my characters even though they are saved on my C drive?
Posted by: Canis Lupus
By default, D2 retains your character saved games when you uninstall ...

I think the uninstall option gives you the choice of not deleting the save files. In eather case, I would back them up by copying the save folder in the diablo 2 folder.
If you have a big hard drive, do the full install too. The game seems to be more stable that way.

I'd suggest a defrag as well. Every now and then my system starts locking up for no apparent reason (sometimes during CD downspin, sometimes during random hits to the harddrive...). At any rate, a defrag seems to solve the problem until I decide to tweak something or install something.
How much memory do you have, and have you checked your system resource meter lately?

PS - people who regularly offer support on this site can also be found on battle.net in the channel Open Tech Support. All the bots in that channel are usually people from this site, if you ever need help while online.

yes, im with shal. whenever my comp acts funny, i begin with a reboot. if that doesnt work, i run all my maintanence proggys: disk cleanup, scan disk, and finally defrag. 90% of the time, that will solve any regularly recurring inexplicable problem.
Posted by: Outlaw
Try deleting all the files and dirs in c:\windows\temp\, they can get corrupted too but that usually causes the game not to run at all.
Posted by: Indira
I scan disk, defrag and delete temp internet files pretty often. I did a scan disk and defrag the other day and the game still doesn't work. I have a 10 Gb hard drive and if anyone is interested a 56 k modem. I'm no expert on computer stuff so don't expect me to always know what you are talking about
I'm going to get my computer's stats now.
Thank you for all the help so far!

OK here are the most important ones, ask me for one if I don't have it and it's important.
PROCESSOR: Pentium III ~631MHz (L1 cash: 32.0 Kb, L2 cash: 128.0 Kb)
MEMORY: 62 Mb (63 944 Kb)
VIDIO CARD: Intel(r) 82810 Graphics Controller
SOUND CARD: Blank Space? What's up with that?
OPERATING SYSTEM: Microsoft Windows ME U.S. English 4.90 (build 3000 )
Hope that helps you guys out.

Hello? Anyone?
Posted by: Canis Lupus
What brand of CD-ROM drive do you have? You may need a firmware update for it or something ...

Uhm... I'm thinking SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-612(E: )? Is that what you're looking for?
I've tried everything on Blizzard tech support. The only thing that seemed to help was forcing the drive letter.
Posted by: Tecil
I was having a similar problem on my old system. When the autoplay screen would come up if I click on Play before the music stopped it would lock up or act funny when it went into D2.
Try waiting till the music stops or completely turning off autoplay.
I had a Pioneer 10x DVD. Replaced it with a 52x CD instead. No problems since.
Posted by: Indira
*wonders how you turn off autoplay... and what it is*
I think it would still freeze if I waited till after the music, but I'll try it cause I'm not sure.
Posted by: Canis Lupus
Autoplay allows the computer to start the CD after it has been inserted into the drive.
I dunno how you do it in WinME, but I think if you go to My Computer and right-click on your DVD drive and choose properties, you might see an option there to check or uncheck Autoplay (not sure because I don't own WinME).
I dunno if this will solve the problem, but it's worth a try ... I'm running out of ideas too
Posted by: Indira
Ok I'll try that. I don't have much I can do anyway.
Posted by: Indira
What does "disconect" in the CD drive system properties do?
Posted by: redwench
didnt you say that if you started it from your computer you had no problems? if im being demented laggy can delete this post.
when you insert the cd, and the amazon screen comes up, choose exit or quit. or disable the autoplay altogether. then start the game using the game icon located on your hard drive.
see if you get the same results. blizz games do have trouble with a lot of combination cd drives.
Posted by: Tecil
The easiest way to disable autoplay that I would suggest is to go to microsoft and download the most current version of TweakUI.
Under the paranoia settings there are two check boxes for autoplay music and autoplay cds. Just uncheck both of those and your set.
Posted by: Indira
I went to try it again and it didn't have autoplay. I waited for the music to stop, pressed play... it froze. I don't know what else to do! It doesn't work at all now. Would it help maybe if I got the xpack and used that CD instead? Is that even the way it works? It's been a while since I have used any games with an expansion.
Posted by: Tecil
Well the expansion is worht it just for the cool stuff it adds.
What happens when you don't click on play. If you just click on the Diablo II icon under your Start Menu with the CD in the drive?
Posted by: Indira
When I click on the shortcut on my desktop a little window pops up with a few diffrent Diablo II files (which it didnt' used to do before and would just start the game) and I have to click on the one that says someting like 'playD2'
Posted by: Tecil
Sounds like the shortcut on your desktop is pointing to the folder under the start menu. When you click on Play Diablo II, what does it do then?
Posted by: redwench
not the shortcut. go into the bowels of your computer files and find the d2 folder. go in it and double click on the icon. make sure the cd is already in the drive. if you still get lock ups and freezes, you may need to use a different cd drive if new drivers arent available.
but if youre getting the amazon and mummy screen, thats autoplay only. you never get that any other time.
Posted by: Indira
When I click 'play diablo II' on the Amazon screen the disk spins and then it freezes. I get the Amazon screen even when I click the shortcut, even though it isn't autoplay.
Posted by: Canis Lupus
Hmmm, if you're clicking on the contents of the CD, yes you'll get the screen ... but if you're clicking on the D2 exe file on your hard drive (or the shortcut to it in your START -> Programs -> Diablo II), you shouldn't be getting the amazon/mummy tomb window...
Posted by: Indira
When this thing I am uploading is done I might try the CD again and straighten this out.
Posted by: Indira
Yeah, it really doesn't work at all now. Would it help maby if I put the DMA (is that what it is?) back on?
Posted by: Canis Lupus
Hmm, let's go back to the start - the ONLY thing you should be clicking on is the diablo 2 shortcut on your hard drive - you don't need to click on "anything" on your CD ... click on the shortcut on your "hard drive" (not the CD) and you won't get the launch screen that freezes you up when you click on it ...
Posted by: Indira
I got it to work! I went to the settings for the CD drive and put the DMA on and it worked! The wierd thing is, it worked even with the DMA off...
I'm on right now, anyone want to play?
Now the question is, will it keep working?
Posted by: Indira
GR nevermind!
I accidently closed the game and I can't get it to work again.
This is so annoying!!!!
Posted by: Indira
I got it to work again! It decided to work this time. I havn't tried it since then, but I bet it wont work.
Posted by: Soul_Riever
I had this problem on my Win98 computer at work once. Only when I tried using the D2.exe to start the game. There is a hidden icon in the Diablo2 folder called game.exe this also executes the game and I have had no problems with that? - Maybe that sounds strange, but stranger this happen with Blizzard stuff.
"C:\Program Files\Diablo II\Game.exe"

It has been working if I go to start->programs, with the occasional freeze. Maybe it will just stop eventualy...
Posted by: Irish_mestizo
I worked on computers while living in europe and what I would like to know is how long have you had that DVD rom? And how often do you watch DVD's on it. Ever think the heads on it are dirty or are just bad. You can get a regular cd-rom for like 20$ and use it for D2 only. But if everything is working now than good for you.
Just wanted to put in my 2 cents.
Posted by: Indira
GOOD NEWS!! The problem is fixed! My boyfriend brought over a new CD drive and replaced my old one, and it worked! Apparently, the one that came with this computer is a POS! It works great now! See you on Bnet!! YAY!!
