Connecting two switches

I have computers spanning two floors, which have been on separate networks. Upstairs I have a T1 connection, a router and, obviously, a switch & server. Downstairs I have a switch & server. We have a data line running between the two server closets. I want to share our upstairs T1 with the downstairs computers. In fact, because of the way our VPN is setup, I'd ideally like to join the two domains, making the downstairs server a BDC. I've run a Cat 5 cable from the switch on each level to the jack for the data line. Upstairs can ping the downstairs server, but doesn't see the stations. In fact, I can ping the downstairs server from our main office, over the T1 connection. Downstairs can't ping anything upstairs -- neither the server nor the router.

I've tried replacing one & both of the Cat 5 cables with crossovers, and it doesn't help. One last note: Upstairs server is 2003 Small Business Server, downstairs is Server 2003 & the stations are XPs.

I suspect I'm missing something basic, but I can't come up with it. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Are all the machines running XP Pro?

If you want to join the two domains, you will need to de-promote one server from a domain controller.

I think the problem is in getting my old gateway numbers unstuck. We had a separate router downstairs, and the server & stations are still looking for it. ipconfig /release & renew isn't doing it.
