Saphire x800 gto2 - Drivers wont work
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just went out and got this card and placed it into the pci-e slot. At first I thought I installed ut wrong since this was my first pci-e card and I didnt know that the lock on the slot is auto-locking.
Anyways I started the computer. The windows boot screen goes up and has the green bar and then it goes back to post. I booted to safe mode and removed all ati drivers period and now it works fine with no drivers at all. In the advanced tab for graphics it just sayd "unknown device".
I tried to install both saphire's drivers and ATI's newest drivers and niether of them worked. Also when it detects the new hardware it says "MEDIA" Instead of "ATI x800" or whatever. Im only expecting that it would say "x800" because it did the same with my old 9800 pro.
Im going to give this another go while I wait for a responce.
Specs:
AMD Sempron 3100+
MSI ATI 480IL - xpress 200 graphics onboard
1gb Kingston ram
480watt PSU
Im sorta thinking maybe the built in graphics may have something to do. Im not really sure how to disable it eather...
EDIT: Yes im using SP1 instead of SP2 >.>
EDIT2: Gonna try omega drivers...
EDIT3: Now using sp2.. nothing fixed
EDIT4: Omega drivers also dont work.. stumped

Bump?

You must disable the onboard videocard in BIOS.
Tap the "Delete key" at first boot screen.
Then scroll with the "arrow keys".
Look for a menue called "Integrated peripherals", or something like it. Then disable the integrated video chip there.
Save the setting in BIOS, before you leave.

I checked the bois at least 5 times for any option like that and didnt find any... ill even checjk a fourth time now..
EDIT: I think it auto disabled the internal graphics becuase during post it shows the full gig of ram.
Also atitools shows the card but says windows isnt using it.
Under the advanced tab it still doesnt recognize the card

O.k. Did you try the Omega driver?
Posted by: chitocobo
Tried omega drivers.. i now installed my french xp so I could get sp2.. also doesnt fix it.
Im using the crappy psu that came with this raidmax case. it claims to be a 480watt psu but aparently watts isnt everything.
Is it possible that this little video card is somehow a power hungry monster? Or does saphire just suck as much as im lead to believe
Posted by: chitocobo
The guys at saphire keep saying my 480watt raidmax PSu is at fault and reccomend me to buy a 120 buck PSu. Thats more than I paid for my case or my mobo or my cpu..
EDIT: The PSu claims to give 13a on the 12v rail.. aparently 18 is the minimum? Even for a lower end card like the x800?

Maybe the Raidmax is less good? But that have nothing to do with installing the driver for the videocard.
And yes, The X800:s and the Geforces, from 6800 and up is quite power thirsty cards. Also needs a rock stable PSU.
And besides, you can find good PSU:s, such as Antec, 500W for 70 to 80 bucks.

But if you planning on getting a new PSU? Also have in mind that AMD use a 24 pin ATX power connector. So for the Antec above, you will have to get a ATX converter 20 to 24 pin:

But I think the most likely soloution, lies within the problems you had before installing the Windows XP.
And who gave you the idea, that x800 is a lower end card?
Posted by: chitocobo
Purchased a Antec 480 watt 2.0 with blue fan
Returned the card and got a new one
Reinstalled windows again (couoldnt format cuz i only got one drive)
Same problem.. except now it very cuickly BSOD before restarting
EDIT: Id like to know how I can format this drive and install windows with only one hard drive attached. No I dont have a floppy drive. Also windows xp disk now says I cant reinstall cuz windows on my HD is newer than the install disk.. wtf?

Bump?

You will have to remove Service pac 2. This is done in "add / remove programs". In Windows control panel.
It is because of this servicepac. You get the message about your XP beeing too old.

Im curious about formating the pc. Reinstalling windows wont help if i keep installing it over the old brocken windows.
Plus im not even sure if its windows thats brocken or if the ATI chipset on this mobo just sucks.
EDIT: Uninstalling sservice pack 2 and hopefully formatting drive. Last time it said i couldnt format the partition becuase it had temporary install files on it. Perhaps this is from accepting to download updated install files

Yeah, a total reformat and reinstall of windows should help. Otherwice, get a new Windows CD.
I dont think this is a hardware problem
Posted by: chitocobo
I heard that this type of thing could happen if the mobo was somehow grounded to the case. When i screwed the mobo into the case i didnt use any of those little circle washers that keep the actual screw from contact with the case
Now im just randomly theorizing.. Ive been spending all my time outside work trying to fix this pc for the last 5 days.. waranty is out on the 7th day
EDIT: Attempting to install windows.. ill be back if unsucessful
P.S: Notice that we have single handidly made the two longest topics in the last while >.>
French windows 4tw >.>

If you did put the standoff pegs correctly and the right amount of them it should'nt give you any trouble. If you did'nt, You probably would have short cirquit the mobo , and would'nt be able to boot at all. Or in worst case have a toasted mobo by now.
Posted by: chitocobo
i put about 5 of them and the board is pretty much done well..
You posted while I was editing the previous post.. and the e-mail notification popped up.. was like "Wow he is too fast for me"

Lol. But try reformatting and reinstall Windows first. And see what this leads up to?
Posted by: chitocobo
Cant reinstall..
My entire hard disk is one partition
Windows setup puts temp files on it
Cant delete the partition or create a new partition.
Thus im stumped.

Quote:
If the hard drive or partition has a previous installation of XP you want to remove, choose to delete the partition by pressing "D". You will then be prompted to create a new partition in the empty space. This will remove all data from the deleted space.

This maybe is a better explanation:

Err thats what I mean. I cannot press D to delete the partition becuase it has the termporary setup files on it >.>
maybe im the only on to ever try to install xp with only one harddrive and one partition >.>
Posted by: goranpaa
But if you just install windows as it is. And skip the reformatting for the time beeing. Then download "Acronis disk director" trial and use this, to create another partition afterwards if you want one?

I got partition magic pro to make a 10gb partition from free space.. then installed windows in that partition.. using the other 240gb as a spare drive for games
probobly cleaner to keep windows seperate anyways
Posted by: goranpaa
Yepp, and you will protect the other stuff you install on the "non Windows partition" if Windows happends to crash some day.
Did the reinstall, fix the driver problem?
