Mixing RAM

I'd like to add memory to my notebook. Compaq Presario 2170US Intel Celeron Mobile 2.0GHZ processor, 512MB (PC2700) DDR SDRAM SODIMM 266MHZ 2.5CL. 2X256.
ATI Mobility Radeon AGF 4X and 3D architecture 64MB shared. 60GB Toshiba 8025 IDE, DVD/CD-R-WR- 4.2GB drive. I would like to add a new single stick 512MB to it and reuse one of the existing 256MB sticks in there now. It only has 2 slots. HP says 1024MB total in two slots. Am I asking for trouble or will this work out. Don't want to buy 2 new sticks. If it's OK should I put it in the first slot or doesn't it matter. Thanks.

if its the same brand, timing, archetecture, etc. it will work. larger dimm usually goes in the first slot, but not always.

I now have Sansung. Both chips. If it will work I'll definetly buy the same. It came with 256. I bought the second chip a while back. Install was really simple. Plugged it in and that was that. If you think it will be uneventful, I'll do the same again. Thanks.

The archives cover most of my questions, but they don't seem to have the same situation I have with only 2 available slots. That's where I'm stuck. I don't want to spend 40 -50 bucks and have to end up with what I have. The only time I need it is during presentations when time seems to stand still when I'm changing files. I may not even be on the right track. That's why I'm asking. Thanks in advice for any help.

It's always good to have 1 gig of RAM. And what Redwench says is the way to go choosing that 512mb.

But maybe the Celeron processor also bottlenecks? As the L2 cashe on that CPU, is half of a Pentium 4.

And also, as the Radeon card, just have 64mb of memory shared, it will borrow from your RAM when needed.

OK. Thanks for the advice. I'll wait a few weeks till I save up my nickles and dimes for the full gig. I can screw things up like no tommorow as it is. Don't need to do it to myself.

Just to keep you guys up to date the addition went off without a hitch. I guess I have a forgiving machine. I plugged it into the slot, powered it up and it read 768mb and it's been fine. They're both Samsung if that makes a difference. Again thanks for the advice.

How much is the L2 cache on that? the sempron has a nice clock (1.8GHz), but a horrible L2 cache (128 KB). Thats why I wanted a Turion (1 MB L2), but at the time a computer with one was out of my price range.
