System Freezing randomly in 3d Apps - nForce4-939, 6800GS
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: Quexal
Hello,
I recently built a new system and am now having very strange issues with it. It seems to be running fine when using any non-3d app. When I load up a 3d-application (such as a game) it will run fine for a random amount of time (Maximum I've gotten was 2 hours, usually more like 1-5 minutes) before it locks up, and I get a "stuttering" sound coming out of the speakers. The sound is like a looped snippet of whatever sound was coming out when the freeze-up occurs.
After the lockup occurs, I have no other option than to cold-boot the system. CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing.
I've tried playing MP3 files to determine if it had to do with the audio sub-systems, and it seems to work fine. I've also been able to watch DVD's and Video files without any problems.
I've also run Memtest86 on it and 10 passes all come out with 0 errors.
Here's the system specs (see detailed dxdiag output at the bottom of this message for detailed info):
- AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
- ECS nForce4-A939 Motherboard
- 3x 512mb DDR400 PC3200 Non-ECC Samsung RAM
- PCI-Express Gigabyte GeForce 6800GS
- Seagate 200gb Barracuda ATA100 HDD
- Pioneer DVR-110 DVD R/W
- AGI 530w Power supply
I have no other peripherals/PCI cards plugged in. I'm running a Windows XP Pro (32-bit).
I've tried the following drivers in all possible combinations with no noticable difference in the problem:
Mobo Drivers: Nvidia nForce 4 AMD v6.70, Nvidia nForce 4 x16 6.85
Video Card: Forceware 81.98, XTreme-G 83.20v2
I've also downloaded and installed the Windows XP Hotfix for dual-core CPU's as described here:
http://www.amdzone.com/modules.php?...rticle&sid=3964
Any information or help that anyone can give will be immensely appreciated. Even if you can point me in the right direction (ie, should I try replacing the Mobo, or the Graphics card 1st?). Free cookies to the first person who can help me solve this problem!
Thanks in advance for any and all help,
Quexal

as youve said its a new build, update the bios first.
Posted by: goranpaa
Agree. Update BIOS ( both the mobo's and for the videocard), And the mobo chipset driver and try the old trusty Omega 1.6693 driver.
But uninstall the previous driver in "add / remove programs" first.
And use a driver cleaner, like "NVcleaner" before you install the Omega. Read the cleaners instructions carefully!

Uh oh...
First off I want to thank you for your support! I really appreciate your help!
Next, I want to tell you what happened when I tried to update my BIOS.
I downloaded the latest motherboard BIOS update from: http://www.eci.com.tw/ and tried to flash my bios. Upon doing so it got about 30 percent through then gave me a message saying that the BIOS update failed because of a checksum error.
Anyways, I rebooted my computer and it now gives me an error that says "BIOS Checksum Error, Insert System Disk in Drive A". So I hooked up a disk drive, inserted an MS-DOS boot disk and pressed enter.. and it gives me the same error again.
I've tried 4 different boot disks now, and a different floppy drive with the same results.
Any ideas as to what to do?
Thanks in advance,
Quexal

Then the BIOS you downloaded, either where the wrong one or corrupted.
Try remove the small round battery on the mobo for 30minutes, This should reset BIOS.
But before you enter the case. Unplug the pC and grab a water tap or kitchen sink to remove yourself from static electrisity.
What tool did you use to flash the BIOS?
The one that came on the mobo CD?

Also once your done getting your bois back then maybe you can tell us what type of PSU your using. Im too weary of PSU's now after ditching a 480 watt that wasnt any good.
By PSu I mean how many amps on the 12v rails
P.S: If boid flashing fails on the videocard you need to RMA it >.<

Ok.. phew...
After going through 2 floppy drives, I decided to pirate one out of another computer... got it in, and now the boot disks work.
I am using the tools provided by my motherboard manufacturer, ECI.
Basically, it's AwardFlash 8.92. I downloaded the latest BIOS driver (1/19/06!) from ECI as well, and tried to flash the bios from the boot disk without any luck. So I tried the next latest driver, and the flashing process worked. My BIOS is now back in.
After searching, I can't seem to find any BIOS updates for my Video Card. The video card is a Gigabyte GeForce 6800GS (GV-NX68G256D-B). Gigabyte's website says that there is no BIOS updates for it.
My PSU is a AGI 530w Power supply with the following ratings:
+12v / 16A
-12v / .8A
+5V / 32A
+3.3V / 20A
-5V / 0.3A
+5VSB / 3A
Unfortunately, even after the BIOS update, I'm still getting the lockups... though not as often it seems. And it's now looking like some apps work for longer than others before locking up.
Thanks again for the assistance!

Great you fixed the problem with the corrupted BIOS!
If the Gigabyte bios update program (That came on the CD with the videocard ( I.e. "Gigabyte utility"), reported there is no update avalible. Then wait a month or so and check again. I had to wait 3 months, before there where an update avaliable for my previous Leadtek 6600GT card the first time I tried to update the BIOS for it.
But also try the Omega videocard driver I told you about earlier.
EDIT: What happends if you move the soundcard into another PCI slot? COULD be some kind of conflict with the videocard.
Also, have you updated the soundcard driver?
You're welcome.

Hello again!
Well... it seems that the Omega drivers are working!! I'm still holding my breath though because there's no reliable way to test if it's working or not... just have to wait and see. In any case, all of the apps that were crashing immediately are now working flawlessly!
Thank you thank you thank you... did I say thank you?

PS - PM me your address and I'll make good on the "I'll send you cookies" offer!

Great! Just hope it will continue to work for you.
I have a friend with a AGP 6600GT. The strange thing is, that most other drivers, that he have tried. (And that's numerous), will lock up the games or overheat the card. But that Omega driver works very well for him.
Have very nice image quality too.
And yes....Hmm I think that you actually did thank me....a couple of times.
You're welcome.
You dont have to send me anything. I'm just glad if I can help out. And as I live in Sweden, the "cookies" will be quite old, when they arrive lol.
But thank you very much for the offer.
