Best way to convert tapes to disk + HD question

Hey guys, I need some guidance. My pc came with a "cd-writer" and a "dvd-rom". Now I want to add a "dvd burner" but I don't have the space to install it until I remove one of the two preinstalled drives mentioned above. I don't want to spend the extra $ on an external burner.
Question 1: Which drive would you remove (the cd-writer or the dvd-rom)?
I'm trying to get set up "to convert several of my own old VHS and 8mm tapes to disk" using a video capture device and dvd burner.
Question 2: What method would you recommend I use to convert my old vhs and 8mm tapes to disk ($ is a big factor)? A "DVD/VHS Combo Recorder" or a "video capture device (usb or firewire) and dvd burner"? Or am I totally confused by thinking this way? Don't forget, I'm a beginner....but I have already purchased a DVD burner (I/O Magic IDVD16DLS) but haven't installed it yet due to question 1). I've also purchased a new WD 250 HDD but haven't installed it yet either.
Hope this makes sense.....thanks a million, I appreciate your input....any and all input will be most helpful to me.

1. The DVD-ROM, since the "burner" will also read DVD's.
2. The cheapest way would probably be with a video capture device for your computer since you have already bought the burner. I did a quick search on Newegg and found video capture PCI cards starting at $29.00. However, make sure to reasearch before you buy, cheaper is not always better. Keep in mind also that you will have to have some software to render the video that you capture and burn it to the DVD. Check out the software that comes bundled with some of the devices, you may firnd one with DVD authoring software included.

I have done this a lot. I have a Pinnacle capture card which came with their authoring software. There are quite a few audio sync problems with this method.
Frankly, the best and easiest way to convert tapes to disc (either CD, VCD or DVD) is to purchase a write-everything DVD burner for your stereo system. This gives wonderful video quality and correctly synced audio. The prices are really dropping -- around $100 Cdn and DVD media can be had for around 20 cents. If you then want to do more editing on your computer, write on a DVD-RW.

Can you explain.....I don't understand what you mean by "a write-everything DVD burner".
Could you give me a particular Make and Model to look at for reference. That would be very helpful.
Thanks a million. I appreciate your input.

Well the way I do it is to put your tape in a vcr and run a video our cable to your computer. I use the Adobe Premier program and they have an analog capture that does a pretty decent job with video quality and audio is spot on. Another way is if your Camcorder has a Ilink port or a USB hookup you could do an analog capture like before. I am doubtful that your camera has that option though, because most VHS recording camera's don't have the ports. Adobe Premier is an expensive program though...so another option might be better...

Something like that is what I was talking about, yes. However, do some research, read the reviews on the product before you decide to buy it. Remember when looking at the reviews, that the software is important also. I can't offer an opinion on this particular one because I've never used it before.
