Can't Open Task Manager

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

If I press ctrl-alt-delete, the mouse goes to a mouse with an hourglass for a second, but nothign happens. Then if I go start->run->taskmgr.exe, it tells me it's already in use. I tried restarting, but that didn't work. I'm usually able to open it. What happened?

i wonder if its opening, but may be offscreen or far to the edge so you cant view it. i dunno, thats a wierd problem. i would try a system restore just to see if that does anything. i'm amazing how often sys restore will fix problems.

I know it's not open offscreen, because it doesn't show up on the taskbar.

there are some trojans and virus' that behave this way so that you cannot close down their processes..

See if you can open the control panel... if you can't - you may have a trojan..

The only way to rid yourself of it - is to find out which one you have - go into Safe Mode, delete all the files that launch the trojan, and install appropriate patches or scanning software...

I've run into this alot as an admin in the last year.
